cannot perform this operation in quiet mode

Thread needs solution

Hi there,

I'm a home user with a 2012 computer and corresponding Acronis version 2012. Just realizing that the auto backup hasn't been working for the past year (!). Looks like the main error message I'm seeing in the logs are "Cannot perform this operation in quiet mode" (0x000103F1). What does this mean and is this something I can fix? How?

I am running ESET anti-virus. From what I can maybe tell trying to google this is there might be some anti-virus setting preventing the backup??

Also seeing a message about "poor quality media" - which I assume might mean there's some issue with the expansion drive it is trying to back up to? There's 1.14TB of space available on the 2.72TB disk. Although I've got 1.2+TB of data in my pictures folder. Do I just need a larger backup drive??

Not tech-savvy here. Thanks for your help. Just trying to hang on to this computer and data before time for an upgrade.

Jaine, we would need to see what messages are posted in the log for the task that is failing for you to understand why this error message is being given?

See post: https://forum.acronis.com/forum/45150 where a similar error message was given that was caused by running out of drive space.

If your pictures folder has 1.2TB of images, then these would be expected to be highly compressed files already and may not therefore compress any further when saved by Acronis in the backup image file, so may well exceed the available free space of 1.14TB on your backup drive.

Thanks Steve,

The message I am getting repeatedly in the log is:

"Cannot perform this operation in quiet mode. (0x103F1)

Tag = 0x1D8EAB676A3F6942Error occurred while reading the file."

This is happening within  the first minute of the backup process, after analyzing the partitions. It happens 3 times.

I have the software set to "incremental" backups.

The final message in the log is "Terminated by user."

Screengrab of log attached. thank you!

Also attached is a snapshot of my disk and partition space.

And if this is a space issue, and I'm doing incremental backups, can I go and delete old back up files and back this up fresh, or with incremental backups does that mess it up? I would only ever want to go back to the last backup, not to a point earlier in time.

Should I instead do "full backups" and just delete old ones as they go along?

Jaine, I can only find the screen grab of the log messages, nothing for the disk and partition space.

The key messages in the log which stand out to me are "Error occurred while reading the file" which is posted three times, each before the subsequent quiet mode message.  I think the latter just means that the error cannot be handled while the task is running from the scheduler, i.e. without user intervention.

I had a similar issue recently which was caused by a file which was locked by my antivirus program (which was a false positive) but which stopped a backup by ATIH 2016.

Please check for any activity flagged by your ESET AV for any files in your 'My Documents' source folders being backed up by this task.

You may need to try to narrow down the scope of the problem by creating smaller backups of different folders within your Documents until you hit the one which has the problem file that cannot be read.
