Cannot restore full validated Backup

Thread needs solution

My question is how do I find out what version of ATI will read my FULL Backup tib backup?

I did a FULL, validated, backup using ATI, and shortly thereafter I got hit by a scareware virus infection. The backup was made BEFORE the infection so should be OK.

I did a re-format of my windows 7 Ultimate OS "C" drive, and now have a blank formatted drive, shown as "S" for Seagate (500gig) on my son's Vista laptop, in a USB caddy.

My Backup is on my son's "F" drive (an external Western Digital drive)

I am confused as to which version of ATI I used to make that backup, as I have upgraded a couple of times since ATI 9.0. I usually do a FULL Backup (and validation) weekly, on weekends.

One version of Acronis that I have installed on the "F" drive is 14.0.0.5105. I don't know if this is compatible with my *.tib backup of 10 January 2011 that I want to restore.

I am stressing out with cyclone Yasi, both my sons being evacuated from their Island resort workplace, my ex's desktop POS crashing again, and my own laptop problem, so I would really appreciate a solution to my RESTORE problem.

Thanks, bigbazza, Cairns

There is no advertised way of determining which version was used when a backup was created. It is a question of trail and error, using your date as the guide and attempt to see which version will validate the backup image.

This is the procedure I would recommend.

1. Your restore procedure is best done back into the original laptop and your best chance of success is to perform the restore when booted from the TI Rescue CD.

2. If you have not done so, create a TI Rescue CD using the 2011-5105 version now and use it to boot into the TrueImage.

3. Validate the intended backup when booted from the 2011-5105 Rescue CD you mentioned having. If it validates, then it should restore.

4. If it does not validate, this could indicate that the CD is a prior version and needs a newer version. If you have several versions of the CD, try them all via a validation function. If necessary, download the newest from your registration page. You can download the very most current "Bootable media" iso file (version 2011-build 6696). Burn the downloaded iso as an image onto a blank CD. This Rescue CD can be created without the version being installed. More info about how to create the iso CD can be found inside my signature index below under item #2--E, F, G.

5. Don't try to restore the backup until you have successfully validated the backup. An older CD will not validate a newer backup but a newer version CD may.

Barry, I believe that each version of ATI Home will handle backups from all previous versions as well as its own. So just find the newset ATIH that you have and use it to make a standalone boot disk and away you go. If that is too simplistic then come back.

That version 14 you mention is ATIH 2011 build 5105. The latest is 6696. Time to update.

Thanks to you bothl.
I finally managed to match my *.tib backup to my ATI Tue Image software version without the need for a Rescue CD. My W7 laptop is now working again.

Bazza,
One of my practices is to include the build number as part of my backup name.
Disk-6696-.tib

This is one example. This tells me that the type of backup was a "disk" option backup and it was performed via build 6696. I can figure out which version 6696 belongs to without have 2011 and the date is part of the explorer data so I don't need it. There are numerous way to implement such. I also include the serial number and build on each Rescue CD and retain all the Rescue CD's for each build/version.

Thanks GroverH, for your suggestions.

It really irks me that we have to go through that sort of rigmarole to do a recovery/restore.
I think I'll look for a simpler backup program that uses "zip" or some other less proprietary format.

Acronis guarantees one version back compatibility. In actual fact the performance is much better than that and being able to go back 2 or 3 and maybe more versions is typical. Note that these are versions, not the more frequently released "builds".

That said, it does seem silly that an archive being operated upon could not pop up a box saying "Created with Version X, Build Y".

Thanks Seekforever. :) I agree about the suggested "popup". That would save a lot of heartache.
