Clone Advice 500Gb to 1TB (TI 2011 build 6942)

Thread needs solution

Hi everyone..me again!!

Can someone point me in the direction of how i go about cloning my main c drive (500gb) to a new 1TB drive that im going to purchase, it seems straight forward if was cloning to the same size drive, just no sure what i have to do if its cloning it to a larger drive, i don't want windows to see the new drive as 500gb instead of 1TB, im no expert and have never used any partitioning tools so please make it easy :-)

Thanks pete

P.s GroverH i know we haven't got to the bottom of my other problem but this PC is very poorly and this i think is more important to get sorted :-)

Which version of Windows is involved?

Item #12 illustrates the cloning to a larger disk. TrueImage will start the example showing how it would expand the partition sizes but they may not be what you want and you will need to make your own resizing of partitions. If you clone, I suggest the manual method.

I personally would not use the Cloning method but use the backup and restore method as illustrated in item #1 at the referenced link. I prefer to avoid the risk factor of cloning just in case user makes a mistake (overwrites the source/old with blank new) or has a power failure or program malfunction, etc which has been known the cause both disks to lose data.

Before you start, be sure and look at the old disk from within the Windows Disk Management graphical view so you know the sizes, sequence and which partition is the active partition. Sometimes the user needs to override the default settings so it is up to the user to know what is correct.

Thanks Grover,
Its windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit,i will have a look at the guides, the new disk should be here later today, there is only 2 partitions on the disc, the main one and the windows 7 100MB system reserved.

Pete

I see the guide is for Ti 2012 , is it the same as TI 2011???

Yes, the guides will suffice for the 2011 CD.

RE: Cloning--manual method
Because you have only the two partitions, I believe TI will properly distribute the space to your user partition and will maintain the same 100 mb size for the 100 mb partition. Therefore, you can probably simply accept the same suggestions offered by the program but visually confirm before you accept.

If you do the clone, do take the time to make a full backup so you have a safety valve if case something goes wrong during the cloning.

Most likely, you could also chose the disk option restore (item 2) but before you click the proceed option, read the summary page carefully to make sure the partition size distribution is correct; that is, the 100mb remains the same and all other space assigned to the larger user partition. If not correct, then use the cancel option without proceeding as there is no size adjustments when using the disk restore option. Be sure and checkmark the "Recover Disk Signature" option found on the same screen where you select the destination disk.
