Clone Disc

Thread needs solution

Upgraded from 11 to 14 Home on new Win8 PC. PC has 64GB SSD with Win8 preinstalled. Added a 256BG SSD and wanted to clone the boot SSD to new SSD. Disc Cloning Progress window starts and after some seconds Warning: Note that the operation will be cancelled if you chosse not to restart your computer now. After restart same issue. Any help and idea ?

Don't clone. Do a backup and restore, which will be safer.

I agree with Tuttle, but if you do want to or have to clone, it is recommended that you use the recovery CD or USB stick, so that Windows doesn't have to reboot into Linux which can cause problems.

You've discovered why Clone is riskier than Backup and Restore. Truly, almost no one should use Clone. While Clone saves a step and saves a bit of time compared to Backup and Restore, it comes with risks as if you don't do it correctly you can end up with a non-booting system.

Your options at this point: it depends on what you did prior to the Clone. Did you make any sort of system backup, either with Acronis True Image or with Windows Backup? If so, you can use it to restore the working system. If you have no such backup, then you are likely faced with re-installation of Windows. If your system came with a recovery partition (as many Dells, Sonys, and other major brands do) you could restore the system to factory state using that recovery process, rather than manually reinstalling Windows.

After returning to a working Windows installation, you could add back your data files if you kept a backup of them.

Vijai,

As mentioned, it depends on what you have done to the drive since wiping the partition. You can try using a disk utilties program that can attempt to recover partitions and or deleted files.

Acronis have Disk Director 11, however this hasn't been updated in a very long time and if you have GPT disks or UEFI boot firmware it may not be successful.

I think Parted can attempt to recover deleted partitions, Paragon and O&O all have disk utility software. The last two are not free.

Whatever you do, do not use the drive any more until you have found a disk recovery utility. Any files written to it will lessen your chances of being able to recover the partition data.

Do I assume that the clone itself failed?
