Clone Disk (Main Disk) to USB (3.0)
My goal is to migrate from my existing HDD (2Tb) Sata to a new 1TB SSD.
My Dell XPS 7210 only has one HDD Sata ports that I know of, so I bought a ICY DOCK MB981U3N-1SA (sata and ide USB adapter) so I could clone to the new SSD w/o having to go through loops of backing up to the network and then 'restoring' to the new SSD (via replacing the old HDD internally).
From what I read it should work.. but doing a clone requires a reboot to media CD. When I reboot the Acronis boot software doesn't recognize the USB drive. I even tried using a 2Tb Sata HDD (Exact same as what's in my computer now) vs the SSD but it isn't recognized either.
In windows when I run the clone software it lets me choose the drives as expected but once it reboots it says it can't find the drive. The drive is powered up correctly etc but it isn't an option in the software.
I suppose it could be my icy dock adapter.. but it works fine in windows! I also tried to format the drive and assign it a letter to see if it helped.. no change.
So can I do something to make this work.. or do I need to take a TON of extra time to do a complete backup to network first and then RESTORE from network. This will take the better part of a day or two I am sure. The size of the backup is only 450GB. If I can't do this.. I suppose I'll try the restore.. but I got the software so I could specifically do this (after reading some posts on it for 2013 version). So I am a bit disappointed the latest software doesn't seem to support it anymore.

the xps 2710 has 6 USB all 3.0
The cable I am using came with the adapter which is also 3.0

Maybe you could borrow a usb2 cable. It will fit the 3.0 connector and act as 2.0

The cable didn't make a difference.
I have a backup as of a few days ago. I backup weekly. I just didn't want to run a full image backup right now before trying to do the clone.
I was hoping to just clone and swap drives and be done :(.
Looks like I am stuck using the network since the only other option would be to make a backup to the other 2TB drive using the USB adapter.
but then I can't copy that to the SSD unless I swap the SSD in and do a boot restore.. since the adapter will already be in use from the HDD.
The Disk Image Backup option would be: HDD to Network as disk image? Then restore to SSD from that network source? How is that different then doing a full partition backup (which I run weekly) and restoring from the network in that way.
I assume if I do this.. at least I have no risk to my main source HDD?
