Clone tow laptops to one external Hard drive

Thread needs solution

I have two laptops both had their own external hard drives that I would image to using acronis. the one external drive died. I am wondering if I can use the one remaining external drive to image both laptop computers to. If so can someone tell me step by step how to do it. I am not very tech savy.

Hello Brinka,

Welcome to the forum and thank you for posting. I will certainly help you with resolving this issue.

I would recommend downloading the latest version of the bootable media first, you can do it from your Acronis web-account.

After that you can follow this extensive cloning guide which lists all the details of a correct cloning procedure. Just in case, according to our Licensing policy you can use 1 copy of the program on 1 computer.

I had to edit your post to remove private information.

Please let me know if you have have additional questions.

Thank you.

Brinka,
You can NOT clone two computers to one external disk. The reason being that cloning is at disk level and one clone would overwrite the prior clone.

You most certainly can use one external disk to store "backup" files of each computer and store each computers backup files in its own separate folder. These backup files are compressed data files and stored the same as any other file. These type backup can be backup of your files or of a single or all partitons. The size of any of your backups will be about 70% of its used space.

If you want your backups capable of producing a duplicate disk should there be a need, then the type of backup that you need to perform is one which is most often called a "disk" option backup and it must include all partitions within the same backup. The picture below shows how to create a "disk"option backup when booted from the TI Rescue CD.
