clone on a Western Digital hard disk => restore point problem

Thread needs solution

Hi everybody,
I often use Acronis to migrate a disk on an other by cloning (not image).
This time, I cloned a Seagate drive on a Western Digital drive. The OS is Vista.

After cloning, there was a lot of problem : not possible to make a Windows update, problem on Live Mail, not possible to create manually restore points, the TaskSchedule is empty with a lot of errors.

I found topics about a patch from HP for Inter Storage. After install, Windows Update and Live Mail are OK.
But not the restore and taskschedule.

I found on the Web few topics about drivetable.txt on XP, in System Volume Information, wich contains informations about hard disk structure and becomes obsolete if the original disk is changed. It seems that removing this file and restart the computer, il must write a new one and the problem is resolved.

It seems this file has an other name on Vista : change.log. But there isn't a file with this name into the directory. (VISTA SP2)

Have you ever heard of this problem ?

Thanks a lot !

Camille,
While I am familiar with those terms/files, I've never bothered messing with any of them. Further, the "System Volume Information" directory is protected and is not user accessible, unless the disk is slaved in another machine. There is no real reason to go in there.

My personal opinion, I feel a more effective use of your time might be to create a full disk image back up and use it to restore to the new disk. While cloning is good in a pinch, it is safest and preferred to use the disk image back up / restore option, using Acronis Boot Media. Bottom line, you can spend your holiday troubleshooting why and how to fix, or you can create a back up and restore it to the new drive and be done. My 2 cents. Good Luck.
