cloned partitions proportionally do not use full size of new ssd

Replacing mSATA card in Dell 7440 with a Crucial 1 TB ssd. When I clone the old to new, the size on the new ssd is the same as on the mSATA card. The ssd does boot fine, but only using a quarter of the space available on the drive. The cloning software would not recognize the mSATA connected via usb, so place card into the laptop and cloned that way. Tried automatically and manually without success. What did I do wrong?

Glenn, welcome to these User Forums.

I don't have an answer as to why the automatic resizing of partitions hasn't worked for you but the good news is that you can very easily remedy this situation by using a third-party product such as the free MiniTool Partition Wizard which will allow you to move and resize your partitions to however you would like them to be.

You will need to install the MiniTool program then do the reorganisation of partitions using the Windows GUI panel options that are shown, after which, MiniTool will want to reboot the Dell to do the actual work involved outside of Windows.  I prefer to take this approach personally rather than allowing ATI to randomly decide which partitions are what size etc.
