CLONING FAILED - "HAL.DLL NOT FOUND" see details...

Thread needs solution

hello:

Recently i tried to re-clone (first time was successful ) a small WD hard disk to a brand new larger disk.  I'm attempting to save an XP sp3 installation from one EIDE to another.  In both operations, i let the acronis software set the partition sizes and use the entire space available.

All went well (without any error msgs), and when acronis finished, i did the final steps of removing the old disk and setting the new disk as "master" on controller 1.  Then i simply restarted the system, but after the BIOS post, the screen showed the error msg "HAL.DLL not found, insert boot media" - if i remember correctly.

I then made some attempts to put HAL.DLL in the correct directory, but all failed.  Admittedly, i'm getting older, yet sadly no wiser and need some advice on what to try next.  I have the original XP cd and even a bootable acronis disk, etc., but nothing works.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hello, when you say "I did the final steps of removing the old disk and setting the new disk as "master" on controller 1." - is this the exact same location where the removed old disk was?

When cloning the two drives must be placed in exactly the same physical position when finished, which is why the recommendation here is to do the cloning that way too.

Remove the original boot drive (70gb WD - EIDE) and replace with the new target drive (250gb WD -EIDE) - ensuring that all jumpers on the IDE drives are set in the same position, i.e. if the original drive was Master, then the new drive should be set as Master.  Set the jumper on the original drive (70gb WD) as needed for where it is relocated to, i.e. as Slave or Cable Select if connected to a secondary IDE connector on the same cable to the motherboard.

Then boot from the Acronis bootable rescue media and perform the clone from the 70gb drive to the new 250gb.

Finally, when the clone is complete, shutdown and remove the 70gb drive from the system, then start the system from the 250gb drive.

See KB document: 56634: Acronis True Image 2016: Cloning Disks - this is written for ATIH 2016 but the principle still applies to earlier versions of ATIH.

STEVE,

I THANK YOU FOR THE QUICK RESPONSE AND WILL GIVE THIS METHOD A TRY.

ONE OF MY DIFFICULTIES WAS FINDING A METHOD OF 'CLEANING' THE NEW/TARGET DISK OF THE PREVIOUS FAILED DATA AND FORMATTING.   I SEE THAT THIS PROCESS IS ACTUALLY BUILT INTO THE BOOT DISK METHOD - GREAT !  ONE DOWN; ONE TO GO.

AS I HAVE SEVERAL PC PROJECTS UNDERWAY (NEW MONITOR (ASUS VX238H - WOW), FIXING A 2TB EXTERNAL HD (AGAIN), ETC.), THERE MIGHT BE SOME DELAY IN CONFIRMING YOUR SUGGESTION.  I WILL, HOWEVER, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

AGAIN, I THANK YOU FOR THE ASSISTANCE.
