"Cloning operation has failed" repeatedly (HDD => SSD; ATI 2012)

Thread needs solution

I am trying to replace my laptop's HDD with a new SSD - of lower total capacity, but with ample clearance over the used space.

I have attempted this both using the ATI (2012) cloning option and also by attempting to restore a full backup to the new disk - both when installed in a USB housing and when installed as the sole drive in the laptop.

All cloning attempts have failed with "Cloning operation has failed" or "Clone disk operation failed". I have tried both automatic and manual options for the cloing operation.

I also attempted Recovery of a full backup to the new disc but never managed even to get that started, because either the source (full) backup or the target diskwere not being made visible and correctly identified.

Details follow. So far I have not found a Forum thread that targets exactly this problem.

Computer: HP/Compaq 6710b. HDD (old c:) is a Fujitsu 232Gb drive, 116Gb used; the SSD is an Intel 168Gb unit (sizes as reported by Windows Explorer [binary]).

Windows 7 64-bit. Just one partition on the disk.

ATIH: 2012, Update 2 (built 7119) - with freshly-created bootable media (CD).

Most of my attempts were made after booting from the Acronis bootable media. Several cloning efforts appeared to start smoothly and reported they were calculating the time needed, only for the message that the operation had failed to appear.

I have reinstalled the old HDD but I am attaching two Acronis System Reports in case they give a clue:

.... from ATI running in Windows;
.... from the ATI bootable media environment

(Generating second attachment [ATI bootable media version] delayed - to be restarted after Report failed to complete after 30 minutes.)
