cloning a partition wants to destro all partins on the destination drive?

Thread needs solution

I want to clone the C: drive, (OCZ SSD - rubbish) to a WD 2TB drive that still has 1.8TB of free space. So why does Acronis have to destroy every partition on the destination drive just to clone C: drive (120MB)
I am fed usp with having to re-install windows and all my aps then having to contact all software companies to convince them I again have to get the install codes to again register thier product. Do not buy OCZ SSD drives, this is my second one and it still does not work properley. I am still hoping Acronis would clone the c: drive and take with it all the registered aps that I have. HELP!

Derek,

In Acronis speak a clone is a copy of all used sectors of a drive to another drive of approximately the same size or larger with no intermediate container file produced. Therefore it can just clone a single partition unless your machine only has a single partition on the disk, which few these days do.

If you want to 'move' partitions on a multi partition disk you need to make either a complete disk image and then resize during the restoration process or just image a single partition. Imaging a single partition will allow you to restore that to another drive.

Having said all that, I am unclear as to how many partitions are on your SSD drive including hidden ones. It is possible that any software that node locks itself to your disk ID/serial number will require reactivating purely because the new disk will have a new signature and is a different size.
