Complete newbie to this stuff
Ok... before I purchase Acronis, I have a few questions about how to use it and whether it'll do what I need.
I have an Acer laptop, just out of warranty, and the hard drive is barely working. I can get it to work by doing a full recovery to factory, and I can load an image I created using "Create System Image" in Windows Backup (Windows 7 computer). Both at factory, and with the image reloaded, it barely works - I get very little time before it goes again. (I can't restart... restarting kills it)
I ran Disk CheckUp to get a SMART report and everything was "OK" except for Reallocating Bad Sectors, which failed rather miserably. I tried the system test (both short and extended) and it didn't get past 10%. No idea what that means, but I guess the bad secotrs thing isn't good... I googled it, but have no idea if they are hard or soft bad sectors.
My main concern is with loading the image I have already created. The hard drive in the laptop is a 320GB (not opened her up yet... waiting on the replacement arriving). I've ordered the WD Scorpio Black 750GB drive to replace it - I had planned on upgrading anyway in the near future, as I had filled the 320.
I'm concerned that loading the image will load on any bad sectors to the new drive, and just cause me more trouble. Also, with it being a larger drive, I'm not sure it the partitions will be right. I don't want to end up with the same amount of available space with loads wasted.
Someone has recommended Acronis to me, saying it can repartition so I don't lose half the space on the new drive, and also that it can overcome the problem with bad sectors. I have a lot of software I can't get back again at this point in time, hence trying to image the drive. Last thing I need is for a new drive to be ruined by me making a mistake.
Sorry this is long... thanks for any help!!!

In addition to Tuttle's suggestion, why not download the trial version of 2013 which will at least allow you to attempt to make an image. If you decide to purchase you just have to enter the full version serial number to unlock it.
Make a recovery CD as well, so that you can check it will boot your PC and see your drives. If you decide to purchase 2013 you would need to make a new recovery CD with the full version as the trial versions have restrictions built in.
