Could not restore the system on empty drive

Thread needs solution

Hello there.

Briefly: This evening I surprisingly couldn't restore my system from the image

Details: I use incremetal backups (full after each 7 increments, and delete older than 45 days).

Yesterday I had to recover the laptop using original vendor recovery media. So I created the latest increment version before that and copied everything to NAS and USB HDD.

After I've done everything I had to do with recovery media I completely formatted HDD and started recovering the system from ATIH images.

I selected restoring the hidden 100mb windows 7 area (the boot one), the system drive and the MBR.

But after it all restored - I couldn't boot up and the BIOS was telling me about MBR error.

I could fix it only using windows disk recovery mode, that fixed MBR and brought the system back to life.

So my question is: why could this happen? And how is it possible that restoring all the necessary partitions and MBR didn't give me the system to the state identical to when I made the image?

PS: small note - I have already restored only system partition (not that small 100mb one and not MBR) couple of times and it went smoothly

zerkins,

Check the link below. Depending upon your needs, item 3 or item 2 or item 1 should be applicable.

http://forum.acronis.com/forum/29618

Item 3 if you simply need to update the drive c with a prior backup.

If bootup problems, you would probably need to use item 2 or item 3 but restore both boot and system partitions.

I do know how to restore, I use ATI for years and I haven't experienced any issues yet.

And of course I could follow the trivial steps in restore wizard

Checked that guides - yes, that is what exactly I've done (are there another alternatives actually?)

I know, my question looks fishy but I'm confused a lot for now - I've done that million times and it always led to success :-S

PS: yes, I restored both boot and MBR as well, and I checked "Recover disk signature"

So any ideas why it could happen in case that I have followed the steps from those guides?

I'm seeing similarities between your Restore problems and mine, and maybe Samy Wees'. What irks me most is the unreliable KB tool. I now read in Samy's posting that he has been advised, by Chat Line support, of an ATIH2012 bug which misreads the "size" of TIB backup file contents. Yet I couldn't find any info on this problem in the KB file, as recently as a few days ago.  So now I realise I am not alone in experiencing Restore hassles in this latest upgrade of ATI, and all of us have done lots of successful Restores with previous versions of ATI.

Cheers,  Andrew.C

@Andrew Chodelski: yeah! This time I also changed the partition size from 73 to 75gb but didn't mention because forgot it (and though it's not important)
