CPU Utilization when backing up a partition
I have Acronis True Image Home 2009. I am (for example) backing up a 200 gig partition to a Seagate USB external drive. It takes over 5 hours and the whole time, the CPU is 70% or above. (This is an older Pentium 3.2Mhz machine.) Is this normal? For the sake of redundancy, I back up the same drive using the Seagate software that came with the drive, which only copies the files one by one. No excessive CPU usage there and it doesn't take over 5 hours. Do I need a 3mhz quad core and 8 gig of ram just to back up a disk drive? Thanks!

Mudcrab,
Thanks! Yes, the build level is 9796.
The partition is actually 250Gig. The data is about 214gig.
The five hours is just to do a backup.
I'm running it now to see how large the image file is. (I'll know in 5 hours, :-) )
The Seagate program doesn't create an image. It merely copies files.

Thanks again.

Does the partition consist mostly of already compressed files (pictures, music, video, etc.)?
Is it any faster if you turn off compression?
How long does it take to copy a 1GB file from the partition to the USB drive? That would give you a general idea of what Windows can do.

Ah, compression. The magic word. Thanks, MudCrab. I turned it off and the speed just about doubled and no more CPU hogging. Thanks for your help!
PS most of the files being backed up are indeed mp3, and jpg.

With "NORMAL compression", your 5-6 hours sounds about right for that file size

With "NORMAL compression", your 5-6 hours sounds about right for that file size and I find that CPU sstarts at about 60% but can increase to 100% by the end of the process. A couple times, TI has stalled out at 1% to go and the image file ends up corrupted.

Hii,
We are running a server with Red Hat Linux 5.9 tikanga version. We have scheduled the online image backup of the server through Acronis 11.5, the CPU utilization of the server is increasing upto 100%. and after sometime the server is going down.
Can anyone help on the same??

Vivek, welcome to these User Forums.
I would recommend raising your question in the Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 & 11 Forum where you may find other users more able to help with your question. These forums are focussed on the Acronis True Image range of Home user products rather on the Business product range.
