Dell Inspiron 15-3521 Windows 8 boots to garbled screen in UEFI mode, shows no hdd in Legacy boot,

Thread needs solution

Just bought Inspiron 15-3521, installed ATIH 2013, created recovery media.

Booting from recovery media in UEFI mode produces unreadable screen after selecting True Image from the Acronis Loader. Another user posted a screen shot which is exactly the same symptom I see at http://download.vivendobyte.net/trueimage_xps12.jpg

The usual reply to enter the command line vga=ask, is not available, from the loader. Once the garbled gui is up, it's too late to change the display properties because it's already hosed.

I tried booting in legacy mode, and did get a readable gui, but when I select backup a drive or partition, no hard drive or partitions are detected.

This seems to be a common problem in the forum. I saw one reference to a hot fix for the UEFI boot mode, but have not found that available anywhere.

If the fix is to specify a command line option at the loader stage, how do you access that menu from the Acronis UEFI loader, which is simply

1. True Image
2. continue

There is no option to provide any command line parameters.

Thanks.

Rescue Media created from build 6514 (the latest Windows version) doesn't recognize GPT disks.

Try newly downloading the Rescue Media ISO from your Acronis.com account. The web site lists it as the same build number as previously, but is actually newer build 6528. It fixes the wireless keyboard/mouse issue and the GPT disk issue. The fixes are only in the new build of the Rescue Media, as no new Windows version has been released.

Thanks, tuttle.

The downloaded rescue media did allow me to see the hard drive and select partitions for backup. So hopefully I'm good to go. I still had to change boot modes to legacy, as the garbled screen with UEFI boot was still there. I would hope acronis would take note and fix that issue instead of the perpetual answer of setting vga=ask, which I haven't seen a single response that that accomplished anything.
