Differential backup file larger than full backup file ?

Thread needs solution

After full backup and in a few days, and after only a few very small new files added to backed up drive, the differential backup file is larger than the full backup file.
The following differential backup files are more like differential backups, much smaller files.
Doing defrag only once before the monthly full backup.
What are we missing ?

Are you sure it is a differential backup?

Thank you for the reply.
Good question.
Wanted to verify b4 respond.
1st part of month, did full backup 10/6, and 'differential backup' today 10/12 (screen-shots attached).
No major differences in files to/from HD.
Same results, d-backup file size larger than f-backup.
Ideas ?
Ps: Would running 'chkdsk' make a difference ?

I am not that familiar with V10. When you set up your differential task do you specifically tell ATI to build it on top of the existing full TIB archive file? Or do you simply set up a second task?

It looks like you are getting an error and failing to create one of the diffs and a new full is being made. When you set up the task, dDid you tell ATI how many diffs to make before creating a new full?

Thanks again for the replies.
Have set up 2 different backup manual 'tasks'.
One is a 'full' backup, and the other a 'differential'.
Is there any kind of 'log' that may indicate a problem, and that I could post as an attachment.
The previous attachment is the the only thing I could find to show the task record.

If you run the differential task again, it should be a smaller backup.

In more recent versions of ATI, when you set up a new task as differential, ATI will create first a new full. In ATI 2010 or 2009 it was possible to "add" an incremental or a differential to an existing full. But that was a distinct operation, not the same as creating a new standalone backup task. That option is not present in 2011 and 2012.

Thanks again.
Yes, it only started happening in the last few months that when running the separate dbkup (after running the fbkup task) that it (ATI-10) created another fbkup and subsequent backups were dbkups.
So, without getting too wrapped up in why the sudden change, it sounds like I should try just running the 1st monthly fbkup with the dbkup task, and if works, just forget about the fbkup task in the future ?
Also, when such a dbl fbkup takes place it sounds like should be able to delete the 1st fbkup file ?

deletion is bsed on the limits set inthe task and ati won't always count all the files in a directory as belonging to a particular task. IF you edit a task, it might treat all future backups as different than the prior ones. So, that issue notwithstanding, it can mange your backups based on file count.

Yes. You should be able to instruct ATI to do a new full backup after X differentials. You don't need a separate full backup task.
