Disk full error message

Thread needs solution

Sorry if this is covered somewhere already. The forum is so vast I could not find anything.

I get an error message saying the destination disk is full when trying to create a new backup. First time I was trying for an incremental, second time I decided to go for a new full backup in the hope that it would make room for itself by deleting old incrementals.

How do I delete old backup files in order to start new series. I realise I will be vulnerable while doing this unless I backup to optical first.

Thanks for any help.

ATI will first complete the new backup before deleting older versions. So you will need enough space to do so.

I'm using ATI 10. I'm guessing you are referring to the rules I can set up in Backup Locations. So, should the total size I set allow for the new backup that takes it over the limit?

Andrew,

I always find it hard to manage a backup by size, because you don't know how it will behave. I personally prefer to set it so that it keeps only a limited set of versions, and I estimate:
- how many of the chain(s) of full+partials I should keep to leave ample space margins (eg 1.5 to 2 times the rough size estimate of the chains I want to keep)
- how many partials I should have before the next full to avoid that the last full backup becomes too old for me to go back to (in the worst case where partials become corrupted)

Thanks for that. I think maybe I need a bigger external drive......

I see what you are saying, but I think number of backups suits my situation better. Note your comment about 1.5 - 2 times margin and I will experiment to see how much headroom I should leave on the drive. Thanks again.
