Does 2014 still block shutdown?

Thread needs solution

Last version of ATI that worked for me was 2010 because beginning with 2011 and continuing at least through 2013 (http://forum.acronis.com/forum/35174) the software refuses to get out of the way and allow a shutdown if you select shutdown while it's in the middle of a backup.

Being able to shut down my notebook computer and take it with me on a moment's notice is an essential capability, so I've been using Genie Timeline Pro for continuous backup along with Windows backup for scheduled system images ever since ATI 2011 came out. It would be nice to be able to switch back.

Anyone know if ATI 2014 will stop and cancel the current backup if a shutdown is issued? (I suppose I will probably try again with the trial if there are no responses here.)

I assume you are backing-up to an external device. If not, does the PC go into hibernation mode when you close the lid. Also, what version of Windows are your running (may affect what happens when you close the notebooks lid.

My only notebook is a very ancient Toshiba which has Norton Ghost rather than ATI installed. My not so ancient netbook (Win7) may have ATI ... do not use it often so cannot remember.

Ian,

Thanks for the thoughts. Yes; I am backing up to an eSATA drive. I could configure the notebook to hibernate, though with 16GB, it is usually faster to reboot! Also, it it sometimes gets confused about what hardware is attached if I don't completely shut it down when moving in and out of its dock.

I don't know whether ATI will block hibernate the same way it blocks shutdown, but I will be sure to try that also, whenever I get some time to try ATI 2014.

Hello David,

Acronis True Image 2014 is designed in the same way as previous versions. In this article the current behavior of the program is described.

However, I'll inform our development that you find it not very convenient.

Thank you for your feedback!

Thank you, Anna. That KB article was pointed out when I asked/grumbled about the last version, too... but notice that the article your reference was written for Backup and Recovery, not True Image.

The article does offer a glimmer of hope where it reads, "Starting from Build 17437 (Update 0.5) it is possible to select machine behavior for such cases [....] Stop running tasks and shut down". This suggests that Acronis does recognize that delaying shutdown is not always appropriate and stopping running tasks can be the desired/appropriate behavior.

Unfortunately, this option to "select machine behavior" and actually shut down was not present in ATI 2013. Haven't yet tried 2014 myself, but searches for "shut down" and "shutdown" in the 2014 manual shows the only option related to shut down is to shut down after backup.

If you can get the programmers to add that B&R option into a version of TI, I'll probably become a customer again.

Hello David!

Actually, the article was written for both Acronis True Image and Acronis Backup & Recovery.

Currently the possibility to choose machines behavior for the cases when machine is about to be shut down while a task is running is implemented in Acronis Backup and Recovery only. I informed development that you want to have the similar option in Acronis True Image.

Thank you.

Thanks, Anna. If that option does show up in ATI, I would be delighted to upgrade. My current combination of Windows Backup plus Genie Timeline is working okay, but I preferred having everything under on application.

I just had acronis true image 2014 hang my computer for hours - just like the reports on previous versions. The wording of the message on the screen was as others have described - not a Windows message. I had to turn the computer off and then back on to get out of that state. I hope I have not corrupted too much but there are things i must do on this computer and i cannot wait days. Is any solution possible for the 2014 version? I saw notes on a workaround for earlier versions but they did not correspond to options I could find on my current version of ATI.

If you have TrueImage configured to do a shutdown following a backup,
My suggestion would be to disable the shutdown option inside TrueImage and use my alternate suggestion located in link 1 below, index item 1-RA "Alternate method to shutdown "

It is not a solution but can be a successful workaround.

No, I do not do the shutdown following a backup. As I mentioned earlier, I use the computer remotely - thus it must always be on and ready to connect. If it hangs while I am away (e.g., I will be in Antarctica in a week) then there is not much I can do about it until I return. The only solution might be to turn off any automatic updating but then I will miss any important security updates so I might get hacked - which would be even worse.

From reading previous threads, this case was raised before internally at Acronis under case ID ATIHXOXIII-4685. I guess it was never actioned?

This issue is preventing me from using True Image as my primary backup solution...

Really annoyed....

I had Acronis 2013 and then paid and updated to Acronis 2014 Premium. I have it configured for daily backups of my "C:\Users" directory.

I have suffered the indefinite "in progress" message for Windows 8.x and it not shutting down for months. I've even one time left it for 3 days and the "in progress" message was still there failing to shut down.

Now after having a disk sector get corrupted which resulted in a rebuild due to the constant forced shut-downs. I finally get round to doing a search on the issue and find it's actually to do with Acronis! My profuse apologies to Microsoft for assuming it was an issue with their OS.

Why isn't this fixed? Why do we have a ticket mentioned (ATIHXOXIII-4685) but apparently no public way to track it's progress?
How do end users actually raise a defect and see a semblance of accountability?
