Does Acronis TI-11 work with PGP Whole Disk Encryption?
I use Acronis True Image 11 to take disk images of my machines monthly. I want to install PGP Whole Disk Encryption on the laptop I travel with. Anybody know if the two are compatible?

I successfully created an image of my PGP WDE (version 9.10.0) encrypted Win XP Prof SP3 C drive with Acronis True Image Home 11 (build 8.101) by excluding C:\PGPWDE01 from the image.
The image can be mounted fine and seems to be healthy.
Unfortunately I have no spare disk to test a restore.
How are chances I can restore my C drive from that image and that my machine will also boot from that drive?
Has anybody ever tried that?

Hello Joachim,
Let me help you.
Acronis True Image may fail to restore partitions or files encrypted by specialized software.
The following situations can occur:
- Acronis True Image may fail to access an encrypted partition from Windows and thus will not back it up.
- Acronis True Image may back up an encrypted partition from Windows, but restoring such a partition will make it unencrypted. If an encrypted system partition is backed up and then restored, then the machine will become unbootable after the restore. This is only true when working in Windows.
- Some files may be missing in the backup.
Acronis True Image can always create a raw (sector-by-sector) backup of an encrypted partition when booted from Acronis Bootable Rescue Media.
If the encryption key is based on the hard drive or some hardware serial numbers, a sector-by-sector copy may not work as expected. The best solution will then be to create the backup in Windows. Then, when restoring it, do it as you would do it normally. The only difference is that after the restore you will need to rebuild the MBR. See Restoring Windows Boot Loader Manually.
Please reply to this thread if you have any questions.
Thank you.

Hello,
I am new to this forum, and I have spent some time already searching for a solution to my issue. However, I still don't have a clue.
I have a laptop (Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit) with a PGP encrypted hard drive. This hard drive has crashed several times, and everytime my employer had to prepare a new one and mail it to me. Then I had to install and configure all my software again. The whole process took one week everytime. To make things easier for the future, I would like to keep a clone of the drive in my home, so that in case of another crash I can just remove and dump the crashed drive, insert the new one and get going again. (Of course, I would have to restore the most recent data, for which I have a cloud backup solution.) However, I do not know if this can be achieved using Acronis True Image (ATI).
This is how far I got:
booted with ATI bootstick
cloned system drive to external drive using "clone hard drive" option (external drive is same manufacturer, model and size like the system drive, just plugged into an external enclosure)
to test, removed system drive from laptop and inserted clone drive
started the laptop
entered password on PGP screen
got this message:
Windows Boot Manager
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings and click "Next."
3. Click "repair your computer."
Status: 0xc000000e
Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible
What is the problem here? Is the clone not really a precise clone? Any help is appreciated.

Did you allow the system to reboot into Windows while both drivers were still connected?

No, I set the cloning process to automatically shut down the computer after cloning. Then I disconnected the external drive before booting the laptop again.

I suspect that this may have something to do with your P encrypted hard drive.
My preference, always, is to do a full disk mode backup and restore to the new disk, rather than a clone. Clone is riskier and has no significant advantages over backup and restore.
