Dont have permission to access folder Windows 10....plus "media is protected"

Thread needs solution

I made a backup of my home computer to an external USB 3 drive a while back, and due to the motherboard on my old computer dying, I now need to access this backup to get to my user profile folder.

I have successfully mounted the .tib file on my laptop. However when I try to access my User folder to gain access to my documents/music etc I get the error message " You do not have permission to access this folder"

After reading several posts on here I have tried to apply this fix

To change user permissions you need to have Admin properties yourself, which you probably do if your system is a home installed one.

Find the file or folder that is preventing access, right click on it and select 'Properties', from the properties form select 'Security'. Click on the 'Advanced' button towards the bottom of the form, click on 'Add' and make sure the inherited properties tick box is ticked just beneath the button. After pressing 'Add', a new form will appear, type in your current user name in the white box (which will be empty). to check everything is Ok so far click on the 'Check Names' button, if all is well it will add the computer name to your user name if you've made a mistake it will tell you, you don't exist! :) Now, just click the OK button, Windows should now start changing all the security identifiers to your new user log on ones.

Once it has finished, just OK out of the various forms until you are back to the desktop. Your files should now be accessible."

I do all of the above but now I get the error message that the changes cannot be made as the media is protected. The .tib file is on a 4TB external Seagate USB 3 drive

Any clues please anyone on how I can remove the media protection and gain access to my files?

many thanks

Mal, couple of points here.

All backup archives are 'Read Only' and you cannot change any of the settings, security, permissions etc for files or folders within an archive.

The way to do what you want to achieve is to Recover the files to a new location, but keeping the original folder structure, and not selecting to recover the files with their original security settings.

See the following pages from the ATIH 2015 User Guide that describe these options:

Recovering files and folders

To recover files and folders:

  1. Start Acronis True Image 2015.
  2. On the sidebar, click Backup.
  3. From the backup list, select the backup which contains the files or folders that you want to recover.
  4. On the right panel, click Recover files.
  5. Select backup version (data state on specific date and time).
  6. Select the files and folders that you want to recover, and then click Next.
  7. Select a destination on your computer to where you want to recover selected files/folders. You can recover data to its original location or choose a new one, if necessary. To choose a new location, click the Browse button.

When you choose a new location, the selected items will be recovered by default without recovering the original, absolute path. You may also wish to recover the items with their entire folder hierarchy. In this case select the Keep the original folder structure check box.

  8. When needed, set the options for the recovery process (recovery process priority, file-level security settings, etc.). To set the options, click Options. The options you set here will be applied only to the current recovery operation.

File recovery options

You can select the following file recovery options:

  • Recover files with their original security settings - if the file security settings were preserved during backup (see File-level security settings for backup), you can choose whether to recover them or let the files inherit the security settings of the folder where they will be recovered to. This option is effective only when recovering files from file/folder backups.
  • Set current date and time for recovered files - you can choose whether to recover the file date and time from the backup or assign the files the current date and time. By default the file date and time from the backup will be assigned.
