e-mail backup of Outlook 2010 very slow

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I´m trying to backup Outlook 2003 SP3 on Win 7 with Acronis 2012 (6154) on a laptop (dual core 2Ghz, 2GB RAM) from Partition C to Partion F (HDD).
The backup is extremely slow. The PST is ~ 800MB large and it has probaly 20000 e-mails. I´ve noticed that this seems to be completly impossible to backup and filtered the backup. Now I´m backing up ~3000 e-mails (very rough guess) (400MB), but it´s still extremely slow. The backup runs for more than 48 hours and is still running.
Any ideas why that is?
Just now I had the idea I could compress (or compact or trimm, whatever it´s called) the PST. Would that help? Any other ideas?
The CPUs have consistantly a quite high utilization of ~ 50 - 60% and it´s related to the true image process. There is still plently of free RAM (350MB free and 900MB in cache).

Thanks in advance,
Hermann

Hello Hermann,

Thank you for posting this question.

Unfortunately, in this case there may be multiple solutions.

  • Make sure that your Outlook is not open program at backup time. This can prolong the duration of the backups considerably.
  • In the list of changes I could find the note that the following issue has been resolved:
"There is an error when a user is an edited e-mail backup task runs, while Microsoft Outlook is running."

So here I would recommend the following steps be taken:

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

hello all,

I´d like to follow-up on my first post, respectivlely on Peters answer. Finally I could make some time to test the suggestions.
So the problem ist still there, even with Outlook closed during backup. E-mail backup is extremly slow, even after my upgrade to Outlook 2010. I´ve tried to backup a PST with 200 e-mails with ~ 20MB but it´s still extremly slow. The first 100 - 150 E-mails are backed up very fast with a rate of 5- 10 per sec. But then performance drops dramatically to 1 e-mail per 20 - 40 sec. This is what the Acronis Eventlog tells me.
What I´ve also noticed is that the initial analysis phase takes more that 10 min. (also from the logs) . There is one message "create incremental backup " and then the next message is 10min. (!) later "Profile xyy : backup has started" . I don´t know what it did within those 10 minutes.

a regular image backup with Acronis is fast and also the laptop in general is fast. No other performance issues.
I´ve uninstalled Acronis and completely removed the remains of the installation with the cleaning tool provided by Acronis and reinstalled TrueImage 2012. It didn´t help.

Thanks for any further hint.
Hermann
