Error message: Failed to exclusively access backup ....tib during consolidation

Thread needs solution

Help, I am getting an error message :
Failed to exclusively access backup I:\My Backups\MyBackup_inc_b5_s14_v1.tib during consolidation. Make sure the backup file is not opened in other applications.

Since this has happened Acronis 2015 is repeatedly trying to run this backup script. Six times today for what is a once per day backup.

TI 2015 had stalled while making a full backup, having made the allowed number of incremental backups. It was still running after an attempt to shut-down after nearly 24 hours so I had to hard reboot my machine to regain control.

The settings are for only one backup chain to be held and 13 increments between each full backup.

The last full backup was ~398Gb. on I: I have 376 GB free.

I suspect there is a file lock somewhere but there are no hidden files I:\My Backups\

If I click on More details I get no help.
I can't find anything in the help and documentation of use other than it tells me consolidation has changed for TI 2015.

At this point, I am not aware of a fix for your current backup problem. You can try by deleting Backup B5 and its 15 files.
One of your problems may be the default procedure used by Acronis. When a chain is ready for deletion, they will not perform the delete until after the replacement has been created prior to deletion.

My suggestion would be to stop using the problem task and start a new task.
Create the backup scheme as per my illustration GH12 below, except set up custom incremental scheme for
Full plus 13 incrementals. This will give you a full backup every two weeks or every 14 backups.
Set the "store no more than 1 recent version chain", so your chain length will be 14 files per chain.
The first automatic deletion will occur after immedately after the b2 full has been created and all 14 files of b1 will then be deleted.
The 2nd automatic deletion will occur 14 backups later just after b3 full has been created and all 14 files of b2 will be then deleted.
with automatiac deletion of oldest chain after each new full.
You must plan for storage space to handle the 2 full backups plus the 13 incrementals even though the need for the 400
GB of extra space is temporary and only occurs during the creation of the full backup replacement. You may need to manuallly delete some of your existing chains in order to start fresh--or get a new storage disk.

GH12. Create Custom Incremental Backup Scheme. 6 Inc, Keep 4 chains. The 6-4 is an example only with user choice for whatever number of chains to be retained best fits the individual needs. For your use, set 13 inc and store 1 chain.

If your drive I is an external disk, you might consider assigning a permanent drive letter of x or y or z to this disk pror to creating the new task.
Each time you attach that disk, the computer used to assign this new drive letter will alway recognize and assign this custom drive letter each attachment within Windows.

The name assignment of B6_S1_V1-2 on Nov 27 is an indication of something wrong. Any chance you performed a restore either Nov 26 or 27th?

Edit: Be sure that the DEFRAG function is disabled as its running will increase the size of the backup. DEFRAG should only be used after the last inc and prior to the full backup. TrueImage tracks used disk sectors so any changes caused by Defrag will be included within the backup.

I'm also getting this consistently since updating to build 6525. (on Windows Vista - backup destination is on a NAS samba directory the NAS is brand new and has 9TB free) This worked fine before. Acronis is the only application that can be accessing the tib files, as it ran overnight with no other app running.

The backup is set to keep no more than 2 chains each of 1 full and 5 incrementals.

The backup location had 40GB of TIB files before I stopped it (it was set to retry 5 times on failure ).

The backup is of the recovery partition, which is contains 6.5GB and hardly ever changes.

I have another PC (Windows 7) which is still on build 6055, and all 4 backup jobs succeeded yesterday. (same auto cleanup - kepp no more than 2 chains of 1 full and 5 incrementals each. I'm glad I held back updating that one so I could compare.

I'm trying a 3rd PC, (Windows 7) which is also on 6525. I'm trying a backup with the same scheme - and it succeeded...

A 4th PC, also Windows 7 and on TI build 6525, also succeeds without problem..

So it looks like it's not simply the new build of TI. My backup destination was chosen everytime using Browse..., and navigating Desktop + Network + Servername + .... + Folder

Capt TickTock,

It would appear that the upgrade process did not take correctly or ...
My suggestion would be to stop using the bad task and recreate new task with the same settings except use a different storage folder or sub-folder so the targe is somewhat different than before. The TI program does not take kindly to edits so you best start with a completely new task.

If the task worked in 2014, I believe the new task will also work in 2015.

Hi Grover,

that is more or less what I did. I renamed the destination directory, and created a fresh one with the same name.
I tried the backup again and it still had the same problem
Then I removed the backup task from the list, and added it from the destination, selecting the most recent full backup
Then I edited the settings and tried again. It seemed to work, although looking at it this morning, the automatic cleanup options were off, so I don't know if it really worked now...

By the way, I never had TI 2014. I originally installed TI 2015 build 6055, which was just last week updated to build 6525. (I would hope a backup task would survive an update within the same edition...)

Many thanks,

Matthew

It seems that turning on automatic cleanup is not saved if you have incremental scheme selected. It allows you to turn it on, so you think you've done it, but when you open up the settings again, it's off!

It seems you have to selected Custom Scheme for this. That's not clear...

(I've managed to enable email notifications which now seems to be the only way to see any logs, apart from digging in the hidden Program Data directory)

No, automatic cleanup doesn't work. No other app had the file open. And I've already tried the suggestion...:

I'm cautiously optimistic, but completely uninstalling and then re-installing _seems_ to have fixed it. (and that with build 6525)
(Not even a "Repair" install did the trick)

Not too cool though that an update breaks things like that..
