External Harddrive not recognised

Thread needs solution

Using True image 2010. True Image does not see my External Harddrive. It is a Western Digital Mybook essentials 1 TB. He does not see it starting True Image In Windows 7 nor does he see it when i boot from usb.
The External drive is available because i can ping it and put data on it with Windows 7.
But i want to put True Image backup on the external harddrive and this is not possible now, and also want to restore the data when booting True Image from USB flash...

Hello surfer,

I understand the question and will do everything possible from my side to solve the issue.

The most probable cause is that the problem drive does not have a valid MBR or a third party software is blocking the access to hard disk drives.

First of all please check if the disks are detected in file/folder backup or My Data as opposed to full disk/partition backup mode or My Computer.

If the disks are detected in file/folder backup mode and the drives contain only one partition, which fills the entire disk (this can be seen from Disk Management via Start-Run -> diskmgmt.msc), then these symptoms indicate that the drives might not contain a valid MBR (which is often the case with the new drives formatted by the disk vendor) and therefore are not supported. Support for such drives without MBR is planned for future versions. The solution is to reinitialize drives from scratch and ensure proper MBR is created on them:

Please note that all the data from such disk is to be transferred to some other location not on this drive, since the below actions will erase all the data from the disk in question.

  • Hit Start-Run and type in cmd;
  • In the command line, type in diskpart;
  • Issue the following commands:

    list disk

    -> and locate the number of the problem disk (let us consider the problem disk is Disk 1).

    select disk 1

    -> this will select Disk 1 as the target, and diskpart will run further operations with this disk.

    clean

    -> this will erase all disk formatting and overwrite the existing MBR with zeroes to make the disk uninitialized.

  • Then go to Disk Management (Start-Run -> diskmgmt.msc) and initialize the problem disk:

If the disks are detected neither in full disk/partition backup mode, nor in file/folder backup mode, then check the following:

  1. If there is any non-Acronis backup software installed, try temporarily disabling it. See if this resolves the issue. Please also take a look at Compatibility of Acronis Products with HP Backup and Recovery;
  2. If there is any antivirus software, try temporarily disabling it. See if this resolves the issue;
  3. Download and install Acronis driver update.

You will need to reboot the machine to finish the installation.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank you.

Hello Dmitri.

Your note is of no use, sorry.
I have the same problem and I am using a USB HD that already had a clone on it from Acronis, done of my W-7 C:\. I tried many versions of Acronis, 9, 11 and 2010. I also tried a few different USB cables and of course a few different HDs connected to any of the 4 USB ports on my Acer M1610.
It used to clone quite nicely before. I have the feeling that it is a Windows problem, where and why, I totally ignore. Rest assured that the HD was fully compatible, it has been formatted again, there is nothing on the first one that I tried. I am now trying one that already has a clone on it so it too would be compatible but I keep getting the warning that there is only one HD and it can not proceed.

Any help tremendously appreciated. Jean.

Hello Dmitri.

You said: Let me know if you need further assistance.

Hi ! hi ! I sure need more assistance. No way to make a clone. TI will not see the C:\ or should I say HD 0 ( zero ). I can see two USB HDs and clone one to the other but HD 0 is not honoured at all. When on TI, trying a clone, I go to Destination after selecting Source as HD 0, the machine freezes. I have tried v.9, v.10, v.11 and also 2010, they all behave the same.
I do not want to do the cure that you firs suggested as it would flush the HD and then I can not copy/clone it and this is the problem.
This machine used to clone perfectly before, the last clone was about one month ago. It runs Win-7 and besides TI, all is fine. I looked into Events Viewer but there are so many of them that I can not make head or tail of them all.
Do you have any idea what went wrong ? Hoping to read you soon. Jean.

Hello Jean,

Thank you for posting and welcome to the forum. I will do my best to assist you.

Please correct me if I am wrong, from what I understand, there is an issue with your external hard drive detection by our software.

Is it at least visible when you try to create a file-level backup? Were all the Acronis programs that you mention installed on the same computer?

Please try installing the SnapApi updated mentioned in the solution part of this article and let me know if there is any improvement.

If it does not help, we will need to investigate and troubleshoot this issue. Please collect the following:

  1. Get AcronisInfo Utility;
  2. Screenshot your Windows Disk Management (Start-Run -> diskmgmt.msc). See also Creating Screenshots;
  3. Contact Acronis Customer Central with reference to this article and all collected information.

Let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.
