External HDD drive letter changed -> how to adjust backup settings?

Thread needs solution

Hi!
My case is rather simple: I regularly launch incremental backups of my notebook using external HDD.
Everything went well until yesterday, when after connecting the external HDD its drive letter had changed from "E" to "F", and backup attempt has failed.

Question: what is the best/recommended way to specify new backup location (i.e. to correct drive letter)?

P.S. Acronis True Image, build 5560

Each time an external USB drive such as an HDD or USB stick is attached to a machine Windows will assign the next available drive letter to that device. It is recommended that you do this, with drive attached using Windows Disk Manager assign a drive letter to your device. You should choose a letter high in the letter hierarchy such as x,y,z for example. Windows should recognize the drive and leave this letter assignment intact. If you assign the letter E as is currently assigned to your task this will probably fail because if the drive is not connected and there is another USB device attached before the drive is once again attached Windows will have assigned the E to the previously attached device.

You will have to modify your scheduled task run using the new drive letter path you choose. Please follw recommended methods of modifying a task so as not create further problems.

Robert, thank you for the reply!
I'll definitely follow your advice to assign permanent letter (like "X") for my backup drive.
However, my original question is still actual: where could I find information about the "recommended methods of modifying a task"?
(my attempt to do it via "Settings -> Destination -> Browse" failed as after that Acronis started to create a NEW FULL backup with suffix "v2" instead of making a next small increment backup - that was very unexpected and "annoying" as no any warnings were displayed!).
Thanks in advance!
P.S. Sorry for my non-native English.

That action is normal for the application. An incremental has to have a full backup first. The application should continue as an incremental backup as scheduled now.

OK, but I don't want to make a _new_ full backup, instead I want to continue the _existing_ series of a full + incremental backups. How can I do this after changing drive letter?
In other words: for example, I have current backup location at "E:\Acronis_backups\" and already made a full + several incremental backups.
Now I decide (for some reasons) to switch drive to "X" like: "X:\Acronis_backups\".
How should I change backup settings to seamlessly continue the backup process?

You can't!

You can also drive on throught a traffic stop sign but not without consequences, same is true for editing a backup task which is permitted but not recommended.

Yes, you have the capability of editing the task and changing the task destination to point to a different drive letter. The edited result will most likely be the next backup will be a new full backup and begin a new series. Normally, any change you make in the source or destination will result in a new full back or at the very least a change of numbering. My preference would be to stop using the old task and create a new task pointing to a new empty storage folder.

And, if you plan to start over with a new task and use the full plus incremental backup scheme, my recommendation is that you set it up with automatic cleanup so you are not faced with a "disk full" message later. Yes, the automatic cleanup permits using the options of either elapsed days or a specific disk size but my recommendation is to only use the "store x number of recent chains". You can adjust the numbers to fit your storage space.

Thanks to everybody! After several experiments, I've found the following workaround solution (personal thanks to Bob Huffman):
1) In the Backup list I just removed the existing backup record (in the pop-up menu: Delete -> Settings only)
2) In the toolbar: Add backup -> Browse, and specified location of my backup file at new path (I've selected the first file in the chain).
The backup is added to the list, but only "Recover" button is still available.
3) In the pop-up menu: "Recreate backup settings". At this stage it's necessary to review all settings (in my case I had to specify password for my backup, windows account and fix the Exclusions list).
Voila!

Great job, figured you could get there, kind of a different approach but you should be all set. This approach should have recreated the database file so all should go smoothly. If you don't mind reporting back in a few days I am sure others may find the workaround very useful.

Yep, such approach seem to work well. But it's strange that the developers didn't provide direct and intuitive interface support for such probable situation (when external HDD drive letter is changing).
