Failed to open data stream...

Thread needs solution

I have a Windows 7 64 bit PC running Acronis True Image 2012. For weeks backup to a FTP on a NAS worked fine. Last week I started getting "Failed to open data stream" errors.

I then created a new backup on another folder on the same NAS and it completed ok. On the second scheduled execution though, the "Failed to open data stream" error came back:

Any ideas?

There can be many reasons, it seems, for this error: networking issue, pb with access privileges on the NAS, etc. The fix is typically to create a new backup task. You did that. Try again. If the same error comes back, there is probably an access privilege issue. Can you think of anything you modified on the NAS side? Is it possible that NAS connection gets interrupted for any reason?

First post on this forum so please accept apologies if anything untoward.
Having been through several posts on this forum on this particular subject I totally sympathise with Mauricio. I appreciate that Pat L's reply is well meant but this IS a problem with the software. How can so many people have similar problems and it not be?
I think someone at Acronis should address the matter because any program that runs OK at the start then, for no obvious reason, produces an error message which is not, in effect, an error is useless. It leaves customers without knowing if a backup was successful or not!
Anyone from Acronis care to comment, please?

I acquired this software as a freebie from my pc magazine as I have done with others before. It gives me the chance to try them out before paying for the 'pro' version. I certainly will not be purchasing this particular program.

I have struggled with this issue often. It usually starts when the disk becomes too full. I delete files from the drive and then it appears to back up (creates the file) but I get the cannot open data stream error. In the end, the only thing that has worked is to create a new backup. I use the Incremental backup scheme with automatic clean up (i.e. Custom setting). I am using ATIH 2011.

Chuck,
The most frequent issue which causes the automatic cleanup not to work is that the user makes changes in the task via the "edit settings" mode. My rule which I suggest others use is "if a task needs modifications," I stop the old task and create a new task with the new settings--schedule changes is an exception to the rule. An edit will often produce unexpected results.

Another issue f requently posted is that the user does not understand how the automatic cleanup settings work.
For example,
custom/incremental/automatic cleanup
1 full after 9 inc (chain equals 10 files)
Store no more than 3 recent version chains.
Automatic cleanup will begin immediately after the creatiion of the 4th full or after numerical backup #31. (31 files exist)
After the 4th full created, then chain 1 (10 files) will be deleted leaving the 10 files of chain 2, and 10 files of chain 3,
plus the 4th full and the full is the beginning of chain 4 which will eventually have 10 filles.
So when the 3rd chain is complete, the next full will begin cause the deletion of the chain 2, etc.

If you need help, then create new thread with screen captures of your backup scheme and your backup storage folder.
