Failed to read sector '0' of hard disk '2'
I have recently purchased True Image 2014 in order to clone the existing hard disk on my Dell XPS 1530M onto a larger, brand new Western Digital hard disk WD7500BPKT.
I had to purchase the full edition of True Image 2014 because the Western Digital version of True Image, available from the Western Digital website, was not working.
I am using Windows XP Professional and have the new hard disk connected via USB.
The new hard disk is recognised by the Windows Device Manager (see attched screen shot 'Device Manager'), but it does not get assigned a drive letter in 'My Computer' (see attched screen shot 'My Computer'), neither is it detected in 'Disk Management' (see attached screen shot 'Disk Management')
On launching True Image 2014 the following error message appears:
'Failed to read sector '0' of hard disk '2'. Try to repeat the operation. If the error persists, check the disk using Check Disk Utility and create a backup of the disk.'
(See attched screen shot 'Error Message')
By clicking 'Cancel' or 'Ignore' a few times it is possible to proceed with the Clone Disk process and the software does detect the new hard disk (see attched screen shot 'Clone Disk').
In the final stage of the Clone Disk process, once the new hard disk has been designated as the destination disk, a message says 'The selected disk will be restored as is (disk's layout will remain MBR)' (see attached screen shot 'Clone Disk 2').
Then on clicking 'Proceed', the original error message 'Failed to read sector '0'...' appears again.
Can someone please help me to resolve this problem and successfully clone my hard disk?
Best wishes, Mark

Hi tuttle,
Thanks very much for your suggestions.
Two questions:
1. Could you explain how to run chkdsk /r on the external hard disk - it is not visible in Windows Explorer and does not have a drive letter. It is connected via USB.
2. To make a full disk mode backup of my existing hard disk and then restore it to my new hard disk, does that mean I need to make the back up on a third hard disk?
Best wishes,
Mark

You could assign a letter in Windows Disk Management. But, as ATI failed to read hard disk '2', which disk showed as hard disk '2' in ATI when you began the clone? If that's the internal HD, then that's the one I would check first.

The simplest answer is "yes". It could be possible to do it just with your two existing disks, but you'd have to copy the backup image from one drive to another after creation, and sometimes copying can cause issues.
