Fix for "operations are in progress" during PC shutdown in Win Vista, 7, 8, and 8.1

This issue has been discussed over and over, and over again.
In ABR there is an option to disable this specific operation. I do not recall what build this was addressed in., but it was addressed long ago.
For ATIH (specific to this thread) you simply disable Validation, (specifically) perform validation immediately after a back up task. Its a check box. Expand and disable it here
Is this perfect, no. Granted its not my first choice ether, but it's completely solvable. I'm sure my answer will be unpopular with many. Let's not rehash this already exhausted topic.

Backing up your computer but not checking to see if the backup is valid does not make the problem "completely solvable." You should look up the word "completely" in the dictionary. Solving the problem completely would be done better by taking the advice of those who moved to other software.
Of course the problem is completely solvable. Acronis can solve it completely.
They need to understand that even cheerleaders like you refer to it as a problem. They need to do the same thing.

Run the validation manually, or set a validation task to run at another time. I've employed this solution successfully for years.
Going to ignore the cheerleader comment.

Hi Shadowsports,
Given that you appear to have a solution, I am hoping you can assist me.
This afternoon, I got a message:
"Operations are in progress, please wait. The machine will be turned off automatically after the operations are complete."
After five hours, I did a reboot. Following the reboot, I acted upon GroverH's advice as outlined in the thread: https://forum.acronis.com/forum/57523
Specifically, using the graphic: http://forum.acronis.com/system/files/forum/2009/11/5940/2014-scan-at-s…
I have now disabled the bright blue "Auto-search at startup. Moreover, I have removed all backups from the list.
On my PC, I still have images of my C drive (operating system & software) on my D drive (data). My backups of my D and E drives are stored on an external drive.
In your response, you mention that validation should not be run at image/backup creation. That's what I have done. What can I do now? Do I have to delete the physical images from my D drive? Or, having disabled auto-search and removing all backups from the list, am I safe now?
I am not a wizard at Acronis TI. How do I run validation manually?
Thank you for your assistance.
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
I received your PM. You are referencing two completely different features.
Auto Search at start up can keep the program from starting (in a reasonable time) if a large number of back ups exist. MVP Grover has well documented how to disable Auto Search and you appear to have found this.
My validation reference refers to version 2013.
Disable validation after back up creation (option which you said you found) and removed. This is fine, but we all recognize the importance of validating .tib files for an added level of security. Its helpful when it happens on your schedule.
Please review the User Guide http://www.acronis.com/en-us/download/docs/ti2013/userguide starting on page 68. Then scheduling starting on page 157.
It is also possible to validate a .tib image on demand by right click within the user interface. Not in front of a PC now.. A cog is present in your list of back ups. Also important, I recommend that you install the latest build for the version of Acronis you own. This can be downloaded free from your acronis user account.
.Tib files should only be deleted from within the Acronis User interface. Moving or manipulating them outside of the program can break or corrupt the xml database that keeps track of the images, their locations, version chains and scheduling. Post back with additional questions, I'm in the field today and won't be able to follow up until tomorrow. Lots of great people here who can also help and/or work with you.

Hi,
Before I begin, I want to thank you for reading my PM and responding. I greatly appreciate it.
You're correct, I am tackling two issues.
With MVP Grover, I am focused on stopping being interrupted during the day with Acronis looking for missing files. It's looking for backup TIB files that are stored on an external drive.
As suggested by MVP Grover, I have disabled auto-search and I have deleted my list of backups. In other words, my library of backups is gone. Please see enclosed AcronisNoBackups.jpg.
Let's hope that cures my problem.
Now, let's turn our attention to eliminating "Operations are in progress, please wait. The machine will be turned off automatically after the operations are complete."
You wrote:
>>Disable validation after back up creation (option which you said you found) and removed. This is fine, but we all recognize the importance of validating .tib files for an added level of security. It’s helpful when it happens on your schedule.
Perhaps I miswrote something. I have NOT disabled validation after backup creation.
Here's my present condition: On my drive D (data) are let's say ten image *.tibs of my C drive (operating system and software). However, the backup library is empty, as I have shown earlier.
My typical process, if I recall correctly, is that ~when~ I create a new image of my C drive to go on my D drive, I check "Validate backup when it is created" (see AcronisValidate.jpg). I don't believe I check the next box "Validate backup regularly", though I might have.
Question 1: So now, with no library, how do I disable validation for my existing ten image *tib files? (Question 2: Out of curiosity, would I simply use the "gear" if my library existed?)
Question 3: When I create my next image of my C drive, I will choose not to select any validation. I assume I right mouse click or something on the library tib file and then run validation?
>>Please review the User Guide http://www.acronis.com/en-us/download/docs/ti2013/userguide starting on page 68. Then scheduling starting on page 157.
For others' benefit who are using ATI 2014, please refer to pages 82, 83, 71 and 72. http://www.acronis.com/en-us/download/docs/ati2014/userguide
>>.Tib files should only be deleted from within the Acronis User interface. Moving or manipulating them outside of the program can break or corrupt the xml database that keeps track of the images, their locations, version chains and scheduling.
Now that my library is deleted, I suspect I am free to do as I choose.
Question 4: What else need I do to ensure that I don't get the "Operations are in progress..." message?
Again, thank you very much for all your assistance. Although I think we're probably near the end, I want to make sure that everything is as it should be. This stuff is hard to communicate because we all have our own unique ways of working with our own unique configurations.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Kevin

Forget about providing a solution, looks like Acronis isn't even acknowledging the problem, which is unacceptable. Time to move on to another backup program, as there isn't a shortage of them. Acronis knows that are are other programs that do what Acronis does, right?

This same thing just started happening to me in the past three days. The system will not shut down and the screen has the "Operations are in progress" (which had 12 hours to rectify and it does not). It has never happened before. Win 7 ultimate. When the problem started, I realized maybe I needed to update the app which I had not done in quite some time, hoping that it would fix it. I updated yesterday to TI 2014 build 6673. It did not fix it.
Why out of no where would this happen for the first time? I see many others have been having this problem for a year or so. I guess something else changed in my system causing this?
Which also begs this comment: When I shut the PC off last night, nothing from Acronis should have been running. The daily backup is at 5:00 p.m. and I shut the PC off at 10:45 p.m. Even if the backup could not be completed due to an error (assuming the PC was on, which it was) it is set to re-try after a 30 second wait and to re-try up to 5 times. The daily backup takes about 30 minutes, so even if it tried 5 times, it should have been completed or stopped attempting long before the time in which I shut it off. Somehow Acronis thinks the backup failed and it maintains a flag which tells it that the backup was not completed and wants to run it at shutdown. But it never reports that it did anything at that hour. No new backup was completed form what I see, unless it would insist on maintain the original time stamp from when it was supposed to have run.
Lastly, one of the screens indicated the 5:00 p.m. BU ran and was completed but when the tech looked at the restore screen, the 5:00 p.m. BU was not listed there. She drilled down into it and showed me the error that the backup was corrupted. So maybe that is why it thinks the backup was not completed?
But why all of a sudden? It has been working very well for the past 12-18 months.

I can't say why it started happening now, and that's part of the problem. It hasn't been an issue for other people for a year, but for many years.
If there were some indication in the system tray that something was running before the shutdown attempt, it would give people a chance to do something or at least know that something is running and they should delay their shutdown. In my case, the problem was that I wouldn't have needed to shut down in the first place had things been working, and those things would have been working had Acronis not been running. For now, I have no scheduled jobs, and have to run backups manually periodically. It works as long as I don't forget, and the problems of things not working while it's running are no longer unknown entities.
All I can say is that it seems as if Acronis has given up even trying to defend this debacle, but they haven't admitted that it's a problem and there's little chance that they will fix it.

We'll finally after countless years of buying every version last night I uninstalled all Acronis products due to this issue and their non response. I will now look for an alternate product.

Thank for the comments. Since it is a brand new issue for me, maybe some of my data may be usable in tracking down the issue. Here is what I noticed:
I have never had the problem before, unlike many of you. It started on Monday a.m. when I noticed the computer was on, displaying the "Operations are in progress..." message, requiring a power button shut down. I had shut the PC down normally on Sunday around 10:00 p.m. Did not wait to see anything as it looked like it was shutting down normally. Upgraded Acronis that a.m. to the latest version in hopes it would go away but it was back on Tues a.m. as well, after a shutdown Monday night at 10:00 p.m.
In my calendar log, I noticed that on Sat and Sunday, for the first time ever, the calendar log indicated that it could not backup my Outlook .pst file in the scheduled event. It had not displayed this anytime in the past, on the scheduled backups going back many months. Since that error, the "Operations are in progress.." message began to appear. I did some manual backups and they also halted with a warning box requiring intervention, that it could not backup the Outlook.pst file as it was locked and in use. Makes some sense but it never did this before on any of the previous scheduled events which are 12-18 months old. So, either something changed in my Outlook setup causing this or some how my scheduled backup scheme in Acronis somehow became corrupted. I wonder if it has actually been backing up my .pst file all this time without showing an error???? Talked with a 2nd tech there today and he suggested putting the older backup scheme onto manual and creating a new one, storing the scheme output into a different folder. This is in progress and I will keep an eye on it for the next few days to see if the shutdown is back to normal.
Are any of you seeing errors in your backups which could be part of the problem?
Update: The new backup scheme did not error at all for the Outlook.pst file and completed normally. It is set again to do a backup at 5:00 p.m. which is in 1.5 hours. I will update after that incremental backup is completed. Of course the acid test is to see if the system shuts down normally.

This thread started almost 3 years ago. In my opinion for those still having issues find another backup software. As you can see Acronis isn't resolving the problem so I stopped beating my head against the wall. I had Acronis for many years without any problems so I uninstalled the ATIH 2014 and wrote them off as waste of time and money.

I realize that the following solution may not work for all, on the other hand, perhaps it does and all the talk of validation and bat files is unnecessary as is all the snide or rude commentary.
For each scheduled backup, go to "Settings". Go to "Schedule". Click on "Advanced settings". Uncheck "Prevent the computer from going to sleep/hibernate". Click "OK". Click "Save".
Apparently True Image associates "sleep/hibernate" with "Restart".
I hope this solves the problem for all and puts this issue to rest.
- Anmelden, um Kommentare verfassen zu können

this is the most helpful and intelligent response i have seen on this issue and I will certainly try it. Why Acronis could not have suggested this a long time ago , or separated hibernation from restart beggars belief.
i will report back when i have had time to properly test this give
i need to reinstall it again.

As a follow up to my post #64: I had the "operations are running" issue but also had another issue, in which two days before the "operations are running " error began, the same backup scheme I had been using for over a year suddenly had problems backing up my .pst file from Outlook. It was saying it was open or in use for two days and would error, asking for a retry or ignore. It must assume an "ignore" if it is not responded to an a certain period of time.
Anyway, the 2nd tech I spoke with suggested putting that current backup scheme on manual and added a new one. The new one ran fine manually and also ran fine at the scheduled time of 5:00p.m. The pc did shutdown properly that evening and started up normally the next day.
The pc was not on at all on Wed and started fine on Thursday but missed the 5:00 p.m. Scheduled backup from Wed. When shutting down Thursday evening, it paused at "operations are running" but within 20-30 seconds it went away and the pc shutdown normally.
So for the moment if looks like the old backup scheme may have developed a problem which may have caused all of this. So far, the new one appears to be working properly.

I don't know if it works either, but do you really fail to see the irony of calling others rude and snide for wanting the product to work for them, and being angry and the company for not being responsive? To me, such posts don't even approach the level of insulting the people who made the posts. Perhaps you need to look up "rude" in the dictionary. I'm not planning to call you anything, but hope you can figure it out for yourself.
You could have simply made a suggestion. Instead, you started off focusing on other people's commentary.
Even if it works, people are justifiably angry. Acronis could have told people, or fixed the problem of the wording.

A work around isn't a solution to a problem that has existed for almost 3 years when the first post appeared. I think that the unresponsive tech support from Acronis deserves all the negative comments they've received. This software isn't purchased for amusement purposes, it's purchased to provide some sense of a secure backup of important data. I was a loyal Acronis user for many years until this issue arouse, I never received a solution from Acronis. So I have switched to another software that does support their customer like Acronis once did. I monitor this forum to see how long it will take Acronis to address this issue which in my opinion they still haven't resolved nor acknowledged. Good luck to all those that still remain loyal to Acronis may you data be backed up successfully.

I have solved this problem by disabling the Acroniis Scheduler Process. It does mean you have to run backups manually but for me it will keep me going until I find the best replacement for TI.

And yet it seems you could not help yourself from commenting. I strongly you suggest looking up the word "rude" yourself as you obviously have no idea what it means. To give you a hint, you might think discourteous and disrespectful. Look back through the posts in this and other threads and you will find a great deal of rudeness. You might also check out "snide", derogatory, insulting and contemptuous come to mind. I think you might well find comments fitting this bill as well. Next time, before you comment and insinuate, perhaps you should do your own homework, rather than expect others to do it for you.
I have no problem with gripping and being upset when a product does not work, or when the user's complaints go ignored, but being rude does not solve any problem, merely aggravates the situation.
My purpose in making the original post was merely to provide a solution that is not a "work around", but may actually simply solve the problem. If it does, so much the better. I will readily admit that Acronis has been extremely lax in addressing the problem, and that if my solution works for others as it has worked for me, then Acronis was also remiss in not simply clarifying what meant by "sleep/hibernate".
In either event it seems as Acronis has paid the piper since it has lost existing and potential customers.
- Anmelden, um Kommentare verfassen zu können

I don't have to be polite to Acronis. They haven't exactly been polite to their customers. They dug their heels in the ground on this one and buried their heads in the sand. Telling us that it's not defective because it's supposed to work that way is not an answer. We all know better. Windows already has the capability of letting people know that something is preventing a shutdown and letting people deal with it. Acronis still has to deal with computers that crash in the middle of operations or have power failures, so they have to have code that deals with what happens with a shutdown anyway.
When somebody ignores an established standard that works well, it's important for people to point out their error. What they did isn't the way people are supposed to write software. What they did is called hacking. I don't mean that in the criminal sense, but the traditional one. Hacking makes sense when there's no legitimate way to get something done, but carries its own dangers. In this case, there's a standard and legitimate way to deal with the issue. Instead they sabotaged people's computers.
The "work arounds" mean that people either have to remember to run backups rather than scheduling them, or that they have backups that have never been validated. Neither is a good idea. There was no workaround that I considered worthy of overlooking the mess they made.
I have no reason to make snide remarks at the people who post here in agreement that Acronis messed up. I'd be nicer to Acronis if I thought it would get anywhere. But they seem perfectly fine making a product that gets 2.5 stars at Amazon, and don't seem to grasp that making it do what users want would more than make up for in sales whatever it costs them to fix things.
- Anmelden, um Kommentare verfassen zu können

I completely agree with everything you just said. I don't consider your remarks to be rude or snide. Other remarks, however, did hit that mark. As I stated previously, you and everybody else who has had a problem that has not been addressed has every right to be upset, complain, and choose to not use the product. I just objected to being rude at the same time, as it is unnecessary and counter productive.
Just to clarify a couple of things. The solution I suggested is not a "work around". It does not interfere with scheduling or verification. It is merely a setting adjustment. Also, Amazon has True Image 2014 rated at 4.5 of 5 stars, PC Mag rates it at 3.5 of 5 stars, Top Ten Reviews rates it at 9.9 out of 10 and CNET gives it 3 of 5 stars. Not defending the software, just getting the facts straight.

Hello ShadowSports. I appreciate you trying to provide a solution, but this is not correct.
A typical problem that I have had is that my backup volume will be full, and the "Operations.." comes up on a shutdown or restart, including automatic ones from Windows. This leads to a hung computer, because I cannot do anything to stop the problem of the drive being full. In this case, I am forced to hard-reset the computer with the 5 second start button. Also of note, doing this leaves behind gigantic temp files, that it then tries to backup the next time around.
This failing case has nothing to do with validation.
This whole situation is indeed unacceptable, and I wish that you would take this seriously. I'm running 2011, and looked to buy 2014, but I always check to see if you've fixed the problem before spending money. It's quite a shock to me that this has not been fixed.

Have you tried the following?:
For each scheduled backup, go to "Settings". Go to "Schedule". Click on "Advanced settings". Uncheck "Prevent the computer from going to sleep/hibernate". Click "OK". Click "Save".
So far it has worked for me and it does not effect scheduling or validation.
- Anmelden, um Kommentare verfassen zu können

The suggested "fix" of unchecking the Advanced Settings box on "Prevent the computer from going to sleep/hibernate" has no effect when you are actually trying to shut down the computer, at least on my systems.
I have that box unchecked on both the backup schedule and the verification schedule for both of my two backup routines on multiple notebooks in my office. I ALWAYS get the "Operations in Progress" blue screen of aggravation whenever I try to shut down and Acronis happens to be running a backup or verification process.
An earlier post highlights why this behavior is utterly unacceptable: After performing a Windows update one risks corrupting their system if they force the shut down through pressing the power button, which is the ONLY way to shut down the computer if Acronis's "Operations in Progress" blue screen of aggravation is displayed. But you CAN'T power down because that will corrupt the system. So I have to leave that notebook computer running in the office and can't take it with me to get the work done that I need to do at home on that particular machine. Or I can't shut my notebook down to leave for the office from the early shift I was working at home.
I completely understand the frustration, resentment, aggravation and actual harm experienced by users and reflected in some of the comments. The language is not rudeness, as implied by some rather whiny comments in reply, rather it is a completely understandable expression of having been abused by an organization that was trusted with one of our most precious assets, our data and systems. The expressions of frustration are directly due to this AWFUL design element in the Acronis software and the lack of resolution or even response to this severe problem by the Acronis organization.
I've tried Macrium and don't find the UI to be as easy to use as Acronis, but given Acronis's fatal flaw of not allowing a normal shut down to occur, anything that both does a backup and also allows shut down seems preferable to Acronis.
- Anmelden, um Kommentare verfassen zu können

Yes, and that's what people are missing. It's always risky to do a hard reboot and that alone can cause disk corruption. In fact, it's happened to me. It was specifically because of this issue, meaning I needed a valid backup to restore from. Having a product that can fix my system after it breaks it is reassuring, but not breaking it would be preferable. Having to hold my breath and hope that the backup is intact is another concern.
- Anmelden, um Kommentare verfassen zu können

For everyone's benefit, here's what I have done so far. I had disabled validation and removed all tasks.
Please see: 2014-08-12_Acronis1.jpg
Although I thought all tasks were removed, some still existed.
If you have a similar situation, I suggest downloading Acronis Scheduler Manager https://kb.acronis.com/content/1859
and run the following commands:
get list (to check if there are any tasks left)
task zap (to delete all existing tasks)
I believe our troubles with "Operations in Progress ..." will disappear with ATI 2015.
I hope this information helps folks.

I recently helped someone uninstall* True Image 2014 due to the the "In Progress" issue. I felt partially responsible since I had recommended Acronis based on my experiences with the 2010 and 2011 versions which have worked great on 3 PC's.
I read the entire thread, interesting reading. I see good ideas for workaround's but the user needed to get his PC back to the status that it operated (without shutdown issues) quickly.
I've been using the 2011 version's Scheduler for about 3 years with minimal issues. I recall having to restart it a couple of times but otherwise, it's been very dependable.
I hope Acronis gets the "In Progress" problems resolved. The did lose a customer due to this issue.
I've seen some mention of "Macrium" here. I also use it (free version) for cloning and full-HDD Imaging. I wanted to get familiar with a 2nd Cloning/Imaging tool in the event that Acronis (2011) developed issues.
* The Uninstall procedure worked flawlessly. Thanks to "tuttle" for the assistance.

Having experienced this same issue again which was triggered this time by a scheduled backup not being able to be completed because the backup drive was unavailable and something ( probably a windows update requiring a restart ) caused the system to hang with "Operations in progress ....." I eventually could only get the system to restart with a windows repair USB drive created off another windows 8.1 PC.
This is the final straw for me also.
This product is just not fit for purpose and I will be switching to an alternative product as soon as possible.
I have used it over the last 5 years or so for every PC in a small office and since 2011 every update has just got worse and more unreliable and the fact this issue has remained unresolved for so long is completely unacceptable.
I would suggest users ditch this product asap

I learned to really like True Image when I used the FREE version that came with my 3 Crucial SSDs.

Assembler - You are absolutely right - it's disgraceful service and Acronis should be ashamed about treating customers like this.
I have several PCs all running this product and all suffer from this problem. I have paid for all these licences and the product is just unusable with this flaw.
What's made me even more angry is to see Acronis pushing TI2015 with a price to upgrade !
It's unbelievable !
I guess that means we're stuck with this rubbish for ever and doubt very much whether they have resolved it in the new version.
Perhaps Acronis would like to comment ?
And also if they think they have fixed it, offer all 2014 licence holders a free upgrade.
Come on Acronis - what are you going to do !!!

This problem has existed for many years with no solution from Acronis. I've used their product for many years and was satisfied until this fiasco started. Maybe it's time to cut your losses and switch to one of the other backup software's available. If Acronis sees a loss in sales maybe that will open their eyes and respond to thier customers. When income is lost someone at Acronis should wake up and see the light.

This thing has just hit me too and not for the first time. What a nightmare.
I managed to get back to a working version of W7.
I don't want this again so I'm attempting to uninstall Acronis True Image 2014.
This is not a simple process - I get a message saying the program is still running.
I can assure Acronis that I will find a way of uninstalling their infuriating product.
In future I will simply copy my data files to a separate disk drive on a weekly basis during the night.
Edit
It's gone!

John Free,
Search for an "Acronis software removal tool".

I wrote my first software program in 1968 using Fortran. It required 27 boxes of keypunched cards. My entire career has been in IT, and computers have always been an integral part of my life. I have designed software, started several software companies, funded software companies as a venture capitalist, served as CEO of two software companies, and now serve as a consultant to software companies. I have been a user of Acronis for many years and must confess that I consider it one of most poorly-designed software applications ever to dominate a market. The reviewers at Amazon are correct: at every level from its user interface to its deepest core, it is, at best, a three-star product -- and it never seems to improve. Year after year I keep waiting for Acronis to get its act together and evolve into a trustworthy, easy-to-use backup product. But little ever changes. Backups fail to complete for a wide variety of reasons. Inexplicably, the scheduler is always the first or second-highest user of CPU time on my computer. And then there is this infuriating power grab by Acronis that is the discussion of this forum thread. What would possess a software application to hijack the computer just as it is trying to shut down, thenn throw up a scary but totally uninformative message that hangs on the screen interminably until there is no choice but to do a hard shutdown. Acronis' response? This is the way the product is designed. And there you have it. Nothing makes my case more clearly than this insane bit of hubris. The Acronis designers apparently don't even know bad design when it is pointed out to them, so how can we ever expect the product to improve?
As essential as it is, backup is a relatively simple task compared to that of many other software applications, so I am mystified by Acronis' inability to get it right. I hope the more delicate readers of this forum who have tender toes won't think I am stepping on them too heavily. I am not being rude, just honest, and I respect and appreciate the other hard-hitting writers who have taken Acronis to task. I have learned as an entrepreneur, manager and CEO that customers who provide the most passionate, well-considered and even sharply critical feedback are a software company's most valuable asset. For everyone of those who speak up, there are dozens or even hundreds of other customers who just curse their computer screen in frustration. Frankly, I now trust Carbonite more than Acronis -- which is perhaps my most damning comment about Acronis because Carbonite is essentially a commercial toy -- and have been looking for a local backup replacement for Acronis for quite some time. I will definitely give Macrium a try. Thanks for the recommendation.

Hi Everyone,
Well I can confirm that this issue persists in ATI 2015. Been using this new version since mid October. No problems experienced until Shutdown last night.
Happened to me for the first time and, like everyone else, after several hours ended up having to recover by doing a hard reset. Nail biting to say the least! Fortunately I managed to get into SAFE MODE and scheduled a CheckDisk on C: at next reboot. Got back into Windows (W7 Pro 64bit) and decided to remove ATI meantime until a confirmed working solution is found. This was accomplished relatively easily by:
1. Running services.msc and Stopping ALL the Acronis Services
2. Uninstall ATI via 'Programs and Features'
3. Deleted the Acronis installation folder
4. Removed all Acronis references in the System Registry using first 'Perfect Registry' (Raxco) and then CCleaner.
I then Shutdown and Rebooted several times without any issues. Phew!
Now what to do? Having read this thread, it would appear that contacting Acronis Support would be a complete waste of time. Changed days as I have been using Acronis since, I think, Version 6 through to Version 11 and Acronis Support has always been good. My previous version was the 2012 Upgrade and, for me, this issue was not present.
I think it VERY unlikely that Acronis remain completely ignorant of threads such as this. After all it is appearing in an ACRONIS FORUM, for heavens sake! The fact that they have not intervened with some constructive help long before now is extremely disappointing and does encourage us to question how interested they truly are in providing their customer base with proper technical support.
One final point: I disabled Scheduling on each of my Partition images (I have always preferred to time the creation of backups) yet still the "Operations are in progress" appeared last night during Shutdown. Also, for a couple of weeks or so I have been seeing a message popping up periodically in the System Tray informing me that some 'Action' could not be completed (no details). I assumed that the scheduler was still trying to execute a backup to my external drive which is disconnected when not needed. I just ignored the message.
There is no doubt that this issue has shaken my confidence in ATI as the risk of disk corruption by repeatedly performing a hard reset must be very high. This time I have been lucky but there are no guarantees that this luck will continue to hold.
I am considering reinstalling ATI 2015 from scratch and trying again. After all, I still have recent validated backups (validation always done manually and immediately after the creation of a partition image) on my external USB 3.0 drive. Indeed, three were used recently when I upgraded successfully to a 1TB SSD on my M18x. This version of ATI seems much faster than previous versions - so much so that there is now a temptation to perform full backups every time rather than incremental or differential.
ACRONIS, I strongly suggest you take this problem much more seriously. You may feel you have legitimate reasons for digging your heels in, but for many of your customers this behaviour ''by design'' is just not acceptable and those of us being affected need this to be resolved without further delay. This thread can be found very easily and, consequently, it's likely that the growing disaffection could snowball out of control. PLEASE ACT NOW before it is too late! I am sure that you do still have many loyal customers who certainly have no desire to see this product fail. An apparent unwillingness to acknowledge this as being a real issue could turn out to be a huge and costly misjudgement.

You can keep it installed as long as you don't schedule any backups. You can still run backups manually.

Michael Campbell,
The thread about this problem has been going on since September 2013. I was a loyal ACRONIS user for many years when they supported their products. After this problem started I uninstalled ACRONIS and switched, I follow this to see if anyone gets a reply from ACRONIS.
I have a desktop with Vista that I now use Novastor Version 16 for its backup and I have a Windows 7 desktop that I use Macrium Reflect Pro. Macrium is a bit easier than Novastor and Macrium does offer a free version too but I did upgrade to the paid version. I was a beta tester for Novastor and they claim to be revamping their user interface to make it simpler for the home user. I have lost total faith in ACRONIS. I would suggest that if you just purchased it contact their tech support and see if they'll help. If you don't get any help see if you can get a refund then search for a backup software that suits you.
Good luck

Hi Folks,
Lots of contentious posts about this issue. I have to add one comment. I am a regular customer home/small business owner just like many of you and do not work for Acronis. I am currently using ATI 2014.
Maybe my situation is different or maybe the stars have been aligned perfectly in my situation but after I had the shutdown issue for about 3-4 days, I contacted their support team and they encouraged me to delete my current backup scheme and re-create it which was fairly easy. Of course my backup scheme is pretty simple. I am using chain differential backups for my main SSD C:/ drive every week and also standard differential backups on my K:/ drive every day to another HD in my computer.
Ever since I did that I have not had the issue again and this is going on 6+ months. Just saying and not sure how it effects all of you and your backup schemes.
But, fingers crossed, it has not reared its ugly head for at least 6 months for me.

Hello John,
Unfortunately I have to confirm your expectations. Also unfortunately I upgraded to the 2015 version of ATI 38 Days ago - so no more support!
Last week I started getting the Öperations are in progress" error... SO THE PROBLEM REMAINS UNSOLVED!!!!
I am joining the group of dissatisfied customers and am throwing Acronis out.

After reading all the interesting posts in this chain, I decided to try two things:
1) The suggestion by Legal Eagle, Fri, 2014-08-01 07:48: For each scheduled backup, go to "Settings". Go to "Schedule". Click on "Advanced settings". Uncheck "Prevent the computer from going to sleep/hibernate". Click "OK". Click "Save".
2) If that didn't solve it, then change the settings on my Acronis backup (I've reduced them to one since the blue-screen problem started) so it does not run on a schedule but has to be run manually.
I've been unable to do either of those things, because when I follow the process outlined by Eagle, the Save button is grayed out and the change doesn't get saved.
I speculate that this is because I am away from base at the moment and the remote hard disk drive that my backup is set to be made to is not along.
Does that make sense to you-all? If not, do you know of other reasons that the Save option should be inoperative?
Thanks in advance --

Hi Intlman,
My understanding is that you have to configure stuff like scheduling (or not) and type of backups (incremental or differential) BEFORE the creation of the first full main backup image. Trying to change settings later won't work which is probably why I experienced failure and you have greyed out buttons. I've yet to confirm this as I do backups manually and my next is not 'scheduled' to take place for another couple of weeks. Currently I have uninstalled ATI 2015 as I wish to avoid the shutdown issue meantime.
