How many backup chains?

Thread needs solution

Very quick question. Assuming I have a backup consisting of 1 full and then multiple incrementals, such as this:

MyBackup
MyBackup1
MyBackup2
MyBackup3

Under the backup settings for "Old version cleanup rules", it says "store no more than n recent version backup chains". Default for n is 10.

In the above example, is that 1 backup chain, or 4?

Thanks.

Bruce.

Based on the above, remove the MyBackup 1 and add a MyBackup 4 and that is one chain if you have 1 full plus 3 incrementals. The full base backup is always considered as #1 but not so listed.

The first chain will be
MyBackup
MyBackup2
MyBackup3
MyBackup4

NEXT CHAIN
MyBackup(1)
MyBackup(1)2
MyBackup(1)3
MyBackup(1)4

Next chain
MyBackup(2)
MyBackup(2)2
MyBackup(2)3
MyBackup(2)4

next chain
MyBackup(3)
MyBackup(3)2
MyBackup(3)3
MyBackup(3)4

Thank you very much. That answers my question, and yes, MyBackup1 should not have been part of my example. That'll teach me to go from memory.

Bruce,

The new build 6574 for TIH 2011 has been released. The new updates better handles backup retention and consolidation.
