How to restore

Thread needs solution

I created one backup a few weeks ago with a size of 26.5 GB. Today, I created a backup by choosing the add to the existing backup option, which turned out to be a 12 GB file. Now, I will be creating more down the line to append to the original 26.5 GB file. However, for the sake of argument, if I decide to restore today, which file would I choose? I am using Windows 7. Thanks.

Charles, welcome to these User Forums.

How are you making your backups here?
Are you doing this through the ATI 2015 main GUI running in Windows? or
Are you doing this by using the ATI 2015 bootable Rescue Media outside of Windows?

What type of backup have you created here?
Is this a Disk & Partitions backup, or is it a Files & Folders backup?

What type of backup was used for the second backup?
Was this an Incremental or a Differential backup?

Sorry for a lot of questions up front but otherwise there are a lot of assumptions to make.

In principle, assuming that your 12GB backup is directly based on your initial 26.5GB, and that both files are stored on the same backup drive, then to restore your computer to the latest point from these backup files, you would just select the 12GB backup file and let ATI make the connection with the other file and restore all the data.

The file names should also reflect the relationship between them, i.e. both have the same initial stem name, such as 'MyBackup' and then be followed by _full_b1_s1_v1 for the first file, and then by either _inc_s2_v1 or _diff_s2_v1 for the second file (depending on the backup type).

If this is a Disk & Partitions backup then any recovery should be done by booting from the Acronis bootable Rescue media, as would be needed if you had to fit a new empty disk drive.

Hello Steve,

Not at all - ask away as many questions as you want, sir. After all, I am grateful for your help and answering them is the least I can do when you're taking the effort and time to help me.

I am using ATI 2015 bootable Rescue Media outside of Windows. I am not sure if that is what it is called, I am attaching a few screen shots.

It is a Disk Partition backup.

I just now noticed that the default is Incremental backup. And, I am sure that is what it is because I simply hit NEXT and accepted default.

Yes, the 12GB backup is directly based on my initial 26.5GB, and both files are stored on the same backup drive,

TIA.

Charles

Charles, thanks for the further information, all looks good for the answer I gave previously - you would repeat the use of the ATI 2015 bootable Rescue Media and when wanting to do a Recovery, select the latest backup image file, which with an Incremental scheme will also be one of the smaller files, then ATI will bring all the data together from the whole version chain (Full plus all based on Incremental files).
