Installation Procedure for HP DV7-3188cl

I recently purchased an HP Pavilion DV7-3188CL and want to install my copy of Acronis True Image Home® version 11.0 (build 8,101

It is my understanding that there are potential problems when booting up to restore an image because of a potential conflict with the HP use of the “F11” key. Also, there may be a problem with adding an Acronis Secure Zone on the drive containing windows 7.

The specifications on my computer are: HP Pavilion DV7-3188CL; Intel Core i5-430M; 17.3" HD LED; 640GB; 6GB DDR3; Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit; 640GB (7200RPM) hard drive dual HDD - 320GB x 2; LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD±R/RW with Double Layer Support ; NVIDIA GeForce G 105M with up to 3311MB .

There, please provide me with information on the proper procedures and or steps to install the software in order to avoid these problems.

Janet,

If Microsoft have added TI11 to the 'banned' software list you won't even be able to install TI11.

Even if they haven't, I would suggest biting the bullet and upgrade to or purchase the full version of 2010, which is W7 compatible.

Assuming you can install TI11 on W7 (I haven't tried this) there will be a number of parts that might not work correctly.

1. Mounting an image won't work.

2. TI 11 will put it's disk access drivers in the wrong part of registry (Microsoft changed where some driver entries exist in the W7 registry), this might result in a PC that won't boot or become very unstable.

3. Depending on what type of image you make, TI11 won't know about the new Microsoft partition entry system - a restore may well result in an unbootable system.

As far as using the SZ is concerned, with TI11 you will almost certainly wipe out the HP MBR information, which means the HP recovery environment will not be accessible if you ever need to bring the machine back to factory condition.

Personally, I would do the following, once in a postition to make an image:

Make a complete disk image of the system as it is now, validate it and keep it somewhere safe.
Remove the HP recovery partition (if you feel happy about doing that)
Use an external drive as well as the SZ - I don't actually use the SZ as if your drive dies, your images die with it!

The F11 button only works if you activate the Acronis Start Up Manager - if you decide to have an SZ you don't have to use the ASM. You should make a rescue CD anyway, just to make sure the Linux environment can see all your hardware. The ASM will reboot into Linux anyway, and it'll be a bit too late if you discover then that Linux has a problem with your new machine.

Thanks for your reply. I will move forward with the use of ATI 2010, not ATI 11. Thanks for this information it was helpful
