Issue of creating secure zone.

Thread needs solution

What should be a simple task turns into absolute frustration.. to the point of wishing one had chosen different software. CAPTCHA might be a clever device to stop spammers but it also completely blocks legitimate users!! So much for my rant... here is the issue
With a new installation I can not create a secure zone:
Event details:
Failed to prepare operations. Error code: 10 'File system error is found' with extended code: 458,780 'Run list corrupted'
Error code:
Event code: 0X000A0001 +0X00070001C

Any advice most appreciated
Ralph

Why must a help request begin with a pointless rant? When I have trouble with new software, I assume that I just haven't learned it yet. But, so many users here immediately rant against True Image, before taking the time to learn a complex software tool.

No idea what you're talking about. I don't recall ever using CAPTCHA in True Image.

I advise against creating the Acronis Secure Zone. It's really meant as a sub-optimal method of backup for people who have no external target to which to backup. If your drive fails, you would lose your system, files, and your Secure Zone backups.

It's much better and safer to make backup images to an external hard drive.

Also, in the past there were occasional reports of the Secure Zone causing problems to the system. When I installed Secure Zone on one PC, it corrupted the hard drive causing data loss and rendering the system unbootable. Perhaps the latest versions of Secure Zone are improved, but that experience coupled with its inherent insecurity and lack of redundancy cause me to be wary of Secure Zone.

I also recommend against the associated Acronis Startup Recovery Manager. If activated, it modifies your system drive Master Boot Record (MBR), which can cause problems with multi-boot managers and other low-level disk utilities.

I prefer just to use the bootable Rescue Media when needed, either from CD or USB flash drive.

Thank you for your time and response tuttle.
My rant was an expression of my frustration in trying to contact Acronis support. I do not make them jump trough hoops to get my money.. they should not be making me jump through hoops to ask questions. CAPTCHA is used when you try to contact them via email.. No doubt it prevents spammers however it likely prevents ALL customers.

Your advice on Acronis Secure Zone is probably wise.. however I have fears about my backup not being available (seen) by a crashed operating system. I have been stung with other backup software.. a hand full of CD's and no way to access them. I have not checked out the "features" available with bootable rescue Media. I will look into the documentation to see what / how to make rescue media that will boot AND access my external HD.
Thank you again for your time

This is not relevant, since you would not boot from your OS drive. To restore, you'd boot from the bootable Rescue Media.

Ralph2,

First, one reason using an SZ can be more of a problem than an answer is if your drive dies, your nice backups/images die as well :( .

What type of disk set up do you have RAID, GPT, Dynamic Disk, MBR, apart from MBR the others might be a reason why you can't set up an SZ.

IMO the SZ should only be one element of a (more) comprehensive backup plan that includes external backups. A Secure Zone can be handy on a computer where you don't have-or-want an external solution on a one-drive PC, but want to automatically keep backups somewhere that the day-to-day user can't muck them up.

But then in addition to the SZ backups, you also do another backup, on a less regular basis perhaps i.e. every week, where the backup is made to an external drive/location of some sort.

A SZ may make sense on your kid's laptop for example. The rest of us don't need the SZ to protect us from ourselves...

Thanks all.

I have taken your advice and made my backup on an external HD as well as making a recovery CD. And I tested it to see that my computer would boot from and see my freshly made backup.

I will leave the "why I can not create a Secure Zone" as an unsolved and unimportant problem. For what it is worth.. This computer (Acer desktop) is a run of the mill bottom end with nothing special in it. My only speculation on why I am having this problem is due to a Windows malfunction (normal boot but left with a black screen and only mouse movement). I did a re-install using the built in software that in the process made a partial backup of my documents. Extracting these documents and placing them in the correct rebuilt location may have messed up some file structures and left me with folders I do not have permission to delete. A scrambled mess I blame on Windows7.. but the system worked so I should be grateful.

Thanks again.

Hello Everyone,

tuttle, Colin, tomf, thank you for helping!

Ralph, thank you for sharing your experiences.  I've forwarded your feedback regarding CAPTCHA to our web team and contacted you via PM for more details. I'm sorry for this inconvenience you've had.

Besides, I'd like to draw your attention to the fact, that CAPTCHA required if you are not logged into your account only. After logging in you should simply fill in the support form and submit a request.

Let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

I think I tried contacting you both while logged in and not. I know I was confused because there was some reference to my cloud not being active.. and something in the error log (when I tried to make a Secure Zone) referenced not being able to access the cloud.
On the issue of CAPTCHA.. the intent is to copy the letters in a distorted image.. But, with two words.. do spaces count between the words and if so.. how many?

The frustration I had (with CAPTCHA) was there was / is no feedback.. as in you picked the wrong letters, try again. Your template is quick to point out if you missed a filling a box.. It needs to also point out your submit failed.. because... I also tried to use your "chat".. and again that failed.. with a message about my browser(s) (IE and FireFox) configured wrong. Attempting to fix (configure) that also evidently failed.. possibly due to my ignorance on how to do it.

So.. when I finally found this forum.. I had to rant first!

In my opinion.. supporting a forum that has knowledgeable members to offer advice is an excellent way to offer support. BUT.. if you (Acronis) also has a "contact us" then that feature should work without the consumer (me) having to jump through a lot of hoops.
