Is it possible to clone one partition from a hard drive

Thread needs solution

How to clone one partition, the system, to another hd. My hd has four partitions and I want just to clone my system.

Who can help me?

My English is very bad, but I hope someone can explain how to do it.

Thanks for all

Create a disk and partition backup of that partition, then restore it, using the recovery CD.

Doing a disk and partition backup and restoring is the same as cloning, but in 2 separate operations.

In ATI, cloning is only for entire disks.

Thanks a lot.
So, if I understand it well, I cannot do it with Acronis True Image.

Can You tell me what program I need to backup my system?

What you want to do cannot be done using the CLONE function of TrueImage but can be done using the BACKUP & RECOVER option of TrueImage Home . Here is a good link to get started in one illustration of how to create the backup. The Recovery CD can also be used to create the backups.

Also the link below illustrates in methods 1 and 2 on how to recover your disk using the Restore or Recover Options.

It's rare that you would need Clone. In almost all situations, you are better to do it in two steps: Backup, and Restore.

I was not sure when using backup of my C drive also the register a.s.o. are being copied

If you backup the partition that contains all the registry files (this should be the active system logical disk), then you should get the registry in the backup. Just note that Vista and W7 often have a second partition as a reserved partition containing the boot manager, so you need this partition too if you want to be able to restore to another disk and have it be bootable.

Sometimes pc makers put other stuff in this reserved partition (utilities or such), otherwise it's a very tiny partition, 10MB or something like that.

Vista and W7 can also be installed so that a second partition is not used.

So if you want to backup a windows OS partition, then be sure to get both partitions if there are more than one.

I reinstalled W7 some days ago after a crash, therefore I asked the question how to backup my system drive after reinstalling W7.
It's clear to me now, I hope.

Thanks a lot for your help.

CJ,

To clarify, we are talking about disk and partition backups, not file backups, in ATI.

If you want to be able to restore whatever is on your harddisk if, say, the harddisk goes wonky, which all harddisks eventually do, then you want to make a Diskmode backup, which will capture, everything, the OS, all the partitions the MBR, disk signature, the whole nine yards.

You probably want to make a new backup often -- how often depends on how current you would need a restore to be -- how much you can afford to lose. You probably want to keep more than one backup just in case one goes bad or one gets made unknowing after some software muck-up has begun on your harddisk and you don't know it yet (don't want to restore mucked up software).

Alternatively, you can just backup up the OS partition(s) or just data partitions (partition mode backups) but to keep it simple and comprehensive, Diskmode is the way the to go.

Okay, it's now clear to me.

Thanks very much for your help.

Kindly regards
