Migrate Easy 7 or True Image Home

Thread needs solution

Hello, I'm trying to transfer date from my old laptop to my new laptop. My old computer is running Windows 7 Home edition, and my new computer is running Windows 8. I read it's better to make a clone, then just an ordinary backup, so the programs will still work. I saw on YouTube that Migrate Easy 7 would do this. I downloaded the 15 day free trial version and cloned my old computer's data to an external drive with no problem. I then connected the external drive to my new computer and everything seemed to be there, but not installed working programs, as far as I could tell. There were just folders for programs, but no activation icons. Anyway, I then downloaded Migrate Easy 7 to my new computer, so I could transfer the data directly to it. However, when I clicked on the clone drive button, it told me I didn't have enough privileges. So, what is that all about? Then, I learned there is a True Image Home program that also clones disk drives. So, now what? I'm I using the wrong program altogether for transferring my data? Should I be using True Image one instead? Does True Image also have a 15 day free trial? Will the programs work properly if I just use True Image Home. Thanks in advance.

You can use Microsoft's Easy Transfer (built in to Windows 7 and Windows 8) to transfer your settings and data. Any applications you wish to have on your new system will have to be installed on your new Windows 8 system.

If you are looking to "move" your programs from your Windows 7 to Windows 8 system, you should take a look at PCmover http://www.laplink.com/pcmover/.

Cloning is a procedure that makes an exact copy of one hard disk to another. Unless you want your new system to run Windows 7 instead of Windows 8, I would stay away from "cloning" using any product.

Migrate Easy 7 does not support either Windows 7 or Windows 8.

True Image is a multi-featured program, but primarily is used for back up and restore (data protection). True Image can not "move" or "copy" installed programs from one system to another.
