Migrating from laptop 500GB drive to 750GBdrives
I am trying to replace a 500GB drive with a new WD Scorpio 750 GB drive. The new drive supports Advanced Formatting, but (I think) will run in 512byte sector mode also?
I am using a Thinkpad T61p with Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit and TruImage Home 2011.
Initially I have simply cloned the old hard drive to the new one (this is how I have upgraded disks for ages and usually it is fine). The new drive now has 512byte sectors (no surprise). But.. a few things don't seem to work right.. Microsoft Messenger Live will not connect, and Outlook 'search' does not find items.
I'm hoping someone out there can help - there is lots of info on this around, but quite some of it is conflicting.
1. How do I get the new drive formatted as 4096byte sector size?
2. Do I clone using TrueImage 2011, or do I have to do an Image backup followed by an Image restore to an already formatted partition?
3. Do I need to install and run WD Align?

Thanks Grover - as always you are very helpful. I'll step through what you suggest.
In the interim, I have found that one needs to install the Intel Rapid Storage Technology for drives over 700 GB (which the new laptop drives are). Once I installed this, Messenger and Outlook work and performance seems better too. RST reports a physical sector of 4096 and a logical sector of 512. I post this because I figure a lot of folk will be making this move over the coming months - the requirement is not specific to Thinkpads, but appears to be needed by them.
