MOUNTED IMAGE USES ALL available memory

The image mounts easily enough, and files can be copied off of it, but by the time you copy 10,000 to 20,000 files, all available physical memory will be in use. The memory is listed as "in use", but none of the processes are listed by Windows 7 pro 64 bit as using anywhere near 10 gigabytes of memory.
It continues to run, and the amount of memory in use does fluctuate some.
Could this be a leak? What it is doing should not require that much memory.
On one occasion it freed 9 or 10 gigabytes all at once for no reason I could see, but normally the usage just builds until almost all is gone.
