Need to boot Win on diff hardwar and change drivers

Thread needs solution

This is the first time I'll be using True Image so I need a little help.

I had a MB and CPU die and now I have a new pair coming, but the first CPU was Intel while the new one is AMD so it won't boot on my current installation of Windows.

I can't reinstall Windows for a number of reasons, and I was told that I could use True Image to somehow resolve this problem, to somehow make an image of my current HDD and then install different MB drivers. Could someone explain how this is done?

I should say I currently have the HDD from my computer plugged into another computer (but I'm not booting from my HDD) so I can access it. Also, that HDD has three partitions - 1. has windows, 2. has the swap file and temp files and 3. has data. Is it a problem that the swap file is on a different partition?

Dimitri,

You need a combination of True Image 2013 and Plus Pack.

First you would make a complete disk image, then have all your new drivers available preferably in a folder on a USB stick, when prompted you navigate to the USB stick ad allow Universal Restore to find the new drivers. You can also add the drivers into the recovery CD when you make it.

Hi Colin,

How do you add drivers to standard recovery CD, there is no standard way to do it, you can only easily add drivers during an actual attempted restore using PP, or custom WinPE CD with drivers injected? Am I right?

Thanks for the help!

How exactly does this work?

Do I make the image in these windows I'm running now in my other computer, and then somehow emulate the image from those same windows, and then will it boot when I restart the computer and then ask me for the drivers from the original windows (the ones I'm trying to get into)?

(Just to make sure we're on the same page, I took the HDD from my first computer, the one I'm trying to get back on its feet, and put it into my second computer, which has a version of windows installed. I can't get into the windows from the original HDD, it just goes up to the black screen with the Win XP logo and then it restarts)

Syrob,

Sorry you are correct, I was thinking of ABR11.5 which does allow the inf files to be bundled with the recovery media.

With TIH 2013 you can only add the new inf files on actual restore.

My apologies.

Dimitri,

Install 2013 and Plus Pack onto your current PC, make a complete disk image of your other hard drive. Either validate the image or mount it to check it is OK.

Make a recovery CD.

Find all the new drivers you need for the AMD motherboard, you might need to extract them as Universal Restore only works with inf files, copy them to a USB stick.

Boot you PC from the recovery PC, on the Universal Restore page, browse to your USB stick and UR should then pick up the new drivers and then restore the image to that hard drive. That drive should then be bootable once put into your new PC.

Oh, one more thing, is there any way to change the drivers on that original HDD's Windows without having to make an image? Because I don't have another HDD with room enough to make an image.

If there isn't I'll just buy one, that's not that big of a problem.

You need a target disk on which to create the backup image, and from which to restore the backup image. Get an external USB HD. You can get a 1 TB drive for much less than $99.
