Need to move to a new laptop

Thread needs solution

My *$*%#()@ HP G60 laptop is just out of warranty and naturally is beginning to self-destruct due to the terribly hot video chip (and other design SNAFUS.) I have a new laptop and NEED to move all the contents of the old machine's HD to the new machine.

The new machine came with Windows 7. I've purchased a copy of the same version of Vista that came with the HP so I'm a legal beagle. All I want to do is make a seamless move from the rapidly failing old machine to the new machine.

Can this be done using the Acronis products and if so what is the best way to go about the process. I apologize if this has been discussed already, I did do a search and couldn't find a topic that matched up with what I am trying to do.

Thanks,

Bill

Yes, but it is not easy. You need to use Acronis True Image and the Plus Pack to enable the Universal Restore feature. You will need to produce a new recovery CD after the installation of the Plus Pack.
You will need to gather the vista drivers for the new computer.
Then, you would do a backup of your old computer onto a USB disk, and "universal restore" this backup on your new computer.

I am wondering if the following other path would work: create a complete (as in, all-partition) backup of your old computer disk onto a USB disk, then restore that backup. The computer would not boot because you don't have the right drivers. Then you would upgrade from Vista to Win7 and use your Win7 OEM license to activate your upgrade. The upgrade should fix the driver issue, and keep your programs and settings.
