nonstop backup issues

Thread needs solution

Using Acronis Workstation 10 ...

Does defrag play any role? We use Diskkeepr (an automatic defrag program) and run an entire backup plus incremental (looking at tower of hanoi scheme). When Diskkeeper moves things around to defrag, does Acronis look at that a new info and ads it to the incremental backups?

I don't think defrag or diskkeeper has any negative effects on Acronis, but just want to make sure.

thanks

After reading the documentation, it appear to have an effect. It shouldn't affect integrity at all, just the size of the incrementals will become larger.

Page 30 in the Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Manual, or search for "defragmentation" if you have a newer copy of the manual.

From the manual:

An incremental or differential backup created after disk defragmentation might be considerably larger than usual because defragmentation changes file locations on the disk and the backup reflects these changes. It is recommended that you re-create a full backup after disk defragmentation.

Normally, it's recommended to schedule a defrag to occur prior to a Full backup. However, unless Diskeeper is moving large files (or many small files) all the time, I woudn't think the size difference would be too great. In any case, after a few runs, you'd know.

Hi,
my second hard disk of data backup is of 79GB! If every time that i defragment it i must do a new backup it is impossible to manage. I spent my life to backup!!! Is it possible that instead is the .pst uile that create the issue?
Thanks, Bruno

Hello all!

Thank you for your posts and many thanks to MudCrab for kind assistance.

I just wanted to add that the reason why we advise to run a full backup after defragmentation is in the style of backing up the drive.

When running the backup, we create a snapshot of the drive, divide it to several parts and assign a checksum to every piece. This allows us to track changes made to the sectors on the HDD. Should the sector be changed it will be backed up.

Defragmentation doesn't affect the data, but it changes the sectors since it's moving the information. So our product will recognise it as a new information and back the changed sectors up as well. This will make the incremental image too large, so that's why we advise to schedule the full backup.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!

Thank you, now i understand and perhaps this this may be the reason for which your product works better than others (told by computer repairers).
I have another problem with nonstop backup: in the backup of my drive D:\ a folder, only one folder, is missing. This folder (Foto) contains a lot of sub-folders with all my photos!
Can you help me?
Ciao, Bruno

Dear Bruno!

Thank you for your kind comments!

Sure we'll be glad to provide you with all necessary assistance! Unfortunately due to the lack of diagnostic information it is hard to identify the case of the problem, so we will need to take a closer look at some details. Could you please kindly gather the following:

  1. Acronis Info from the machine in question
  2. System Report
  3. Screenshot of the NonStop Backup settings

After that please kindly submit a support request with the information attached and tell us the case number. I will make sure that it is handled in a proper way.

Thank you in advance for cooperation!

I thing that i had a problem with that folder. In any case i have solved the problem in this way:

- created a new folder
- copied in the new all the sub-folders from the folder "missing"
- deleted the original
- renamed the new as the old.

Nonstop backup has immediately included this folder and now works very very well.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for the fast answer

Hi Yana, today i have a problem: some of the scheduled activities has not worked properly. In fact some backups are been recreated as Complete Backup instead of Incremental and from the list of Restore the oldest are not visible, but only the new.

This is happened more times before and i don't understand why. I ask you this: if i Modify a Task without touch the position of the archive, for the program is a new activity? For example, i have a task and i modify only the Consolidation or the number of Backups without tell to the program if it's a new archive or to append to the existent (i skip this): the program the next time what execute, a basic backup or an incremental backup?

I send you the example of the email, but it's happened with the System Status Backup and with Applications Backup.

In general, why does this can  happen?

Thank you and sorry for the many questions and for my poor english!

Ciao

Another problem:
i had used the option to recover from Acronis Nonstop Backup. In fact I have made an attempt to recover from it.
A part the time employee (over an hour and a half), the restart of Windows XP could not use my profile and created a new profile (a new user) completely empty. Luckily I had the normal backup and I could return to the previous situation.
I noticed another problem in Acronis Bootable Media: the hour is not right (1 hour less) and is'nt the way to change it.
I ask: is it possible restore from the bootable media using nonstop backup and why has failed ?
Thanks for your cooperation and best regards

Hi Bruno, regarding the full backup, if you modify the schedule in any way then a new full backup will be created when it runs. And as for older ones dissapearing, have you set a maximum number of archives or similar for the number of full backups.

Now True has just finished the backup of Windows xp. It has made a new basic backup, has attempted to do a consolidation (i have put the maximum size to 50 GB), and has failed the consolidation. In True Image the old backup are missing, but in my hard disk they are present! Look at the screenshots that i send you. I think that the consolidation has failed for the same reason for which the old backups are not present: True does not find the previous backup and cannot consolidate.

In any case the program MUST see the older ones, that are physically present in the hard disk.

I have the release 6053 of True Image Home 2010 Standard. The 7046 is not in my profile for now! May be this the problem?

Help!

PS Acronisinfo is too slow. Please, look at the one sent yesterday. Thank you!

Hello Bruno,

Let me assist you.

1. It seems that there's some GUI issue and that's why you can't see your previous backup archives. I may recommend you to click Browse for backup button and locate the archives manually.

2. Unfortunately, we have not released a new Italian build yet, so #6053 is the latest one. We're really sorry for the delay.

Please reply to this thread if you have any additional questions.

Thank you.

Ok, I removed everything and rebuilt everything from the start, now it works! I think it was the counter of the backups had to be reset.
Anyway thanks for your interest
