Online backup capabilities question

Thread needs solution

I have been evaluating AOB and so far it is working fine. My evaluation trial is running out and I have to decide if Acronis will be suitable as an online backup solution. I have not been able to determine how the software deals with the following. Other online backup services use these techniques but I couldn’t find any articles about Acronis Online backup.

How does the software deal with open files? Does it skip them or use VSS?

Once the initial backup complete does the software backup the entire file when it discovers a changed file or does it backup the bit level changes to save bandwidth?

Are there any restrictions on the size of files that can be backed up?

Are your servers backed up to protect my data or are the data replicated on geographically separated servers?

Thanks,

Bruce

Hello Bruce,

Thank you for your interest in Acronis Online Backup!

Let me answer your questions.

  1. Unfortunately, Acronis Online Backup doesn't support VSS, so it is not recommended to back up some open files as it may cause errors.
  2. The software will back up the entire file if it was changed after the initial backup procedure.
  3. We don't have any restrictions on the file size you're going to back up.
  4. Let me explain how Online Backup works: we have several storage servers, metadata server and front-end server. Front-end server will check your certificate for Online Backup and will receive a data and metadata streams from your machine and split them into chunks. It'll also distributes data chunks to different Storage Servers (5-7 chunks will be kept on different Storage Servers) basing on information from Meta Data Server. Each chunk has the redundancy summary in it, so if one or several Storage Servers crash, the data will be still available for restore. So your data is fully protected

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Thank you.
