Partitioning Question

Thread needs solution

I have just taken delivery of a new PC (Windows 7 - 500GB disk) and Acronis True Image Home 2010, and would like an answer to this question before I set the machine up.   How should I partition the disk for best recovery options using True Image -

  1. Two partitions: Partition A - for Windows7 and all program files; Partition B - for data  only   or
  2. Three partitions: Partition A- for Windows 7 only; Partition B - for Program Files; Partition C- for All Data

My question is this, if I take option (2) and install 3 partitions, would it be possible to do an image backup of the Windows 7 partition and a subsequent restore (should I have problems) and still have the Program files (installed in Partition B) work? Bearing in mind that the registry file would be in partition A? Would it still recognise that all the programs in Partition B were there and still access them?

Hope this makes sense... Please advise best way to proceed.

I would go with your first option. It would be nearly impossible to keep ALL program files on a different partition. Don't bother. Just keep your data on a separate partition/drive and you'll be good. It will be much easier to back up your system too.

I second Farentino's recommendation. For some further reasons, see replies #8 and #9 on this recent post: http://forum.acronis.com/forum/6626

Thank you so much for your quick responses. I suspected the 2nd option would cause too many headaches, but the idea of being able to restore Windows without having to re-install all my apps seemed very appealing, so I thought I ought to check it out...

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your last comment, but if you go with the first option, you will be able to restore Windows without reinstalling all of your applications. Restoring the Windows partition will restore everything (the operating system plus all of your apps) to just the way it was at the time of backup.
