Please someone explain the 1 PC licence

Thread needs solution

I almost decided to get ATI 2012 - despite of the problems about which I read here.

But to decide definetely I need one further information:

I have a notebook, running vista-32bit. Now I will not only change to win7-64bit but also to a new notebook.

My intention is to use ATI for backups on my new notebook BUT also making backups of the "old" vista notebook - in order to place them on the new one or an external drive.

Can I do this with only one PC license ? I suppose ATI has to be installed on both machines to accomplish that, although not necessarily at the same time.

I mean, actually moving data from one system to another is one of the essential tasks of an imaging software. I don't think it is appropiate for a company to demand extra licenses to accomplish that. With other versions this issue never came up; I started once using ATI to backup WIN98 data.

By the way, I am German - so you might answer in German also.

As I understand it you need 2 licenses. Of course you can transfer the license every time (it seems you can do that, ATIH will be deactivated on one PC and activated on the other) this would be legal but is of course a nuisance. This harsh restriction also more or less kills the sync functionality, I'm for sure are not going to buy extra licenses for this.

I guess having ATIH on multiple PC's was illegal in the previous version too, but I think using it "as a book" - you remember the old Borland licenses - is just fair use. With the stupid activation this is undermined.

You can also opt to use a trial version on the old PC, that will give you 30 days to transfer the data.

I have other suggestions too but I think they are all illegal and I do not want to be banned from the forum...

Yes, most likely - and I perfectly understand, that you are not allowed to supply a whole company network with just one lisense; but to guarantee full usage of the product for the private user, they should have delivered a 2PC license as the standard version.
When I used the old versions of ATI, I exclusively did backups on one system to restore them on a new one. No need to ever touch the software on the old system again - it got deleted anyway.

I thought of that, but do not know for sure, if there are any restrictions. I do not want to risk, that in a worst case scenario those backups can not be properly restored.

Never mind, Henk. I know of other ways, too ;-)
But finally having reached a certain age and understanding of economy and proudly having left behind those times of serial- and keygen search, I actually don't want to think of tricks again to use a software I PAID FOR.
Even just to think about it shows, that Acronis is on a fatal track.

But thanks a lot for answering. I might try the trial-trick

Sabine,

You can use a single license of ATI to move your OS, apps and content from one Notebook to another. Once this migration is achieved, per the license, you should not use ATI to continue backing up the new AND the old computer. You will have to choose one that the license will be assigned to.

With 2012, you will have to move the license since it is activated software. You can do this move after having moved your OS, apps and content since you can move all this with the recovery CD, ie without installing ATI on the new machine.

That is all I need - backing up the data - not even restoring, but only copying the images to the new machine, since the OS will be different.

I am very much used to operate ATI from within the system, because my whole old netbook (which I am using right now) is a mess, including the cd/dvd drive. So for the first task of imaging the old data, I can not work with a rescue CD. But I if understand correctly, then it should also be possible to install ATI on the old system, doing the backups and after that to install it on the new one, activate it there, which then results in deactivation of the software on the old system - which I wouldn' mind.

Or did I get you wrong at some point ?

You are on the right track. That should work.
