Problem booting recovered image of Windows 7 on different SSD
Hi everyone,
So, I'm trying to move a partition with Windows 7 Professional N x64 from one SSD to another. I have my trusted USB flash drive with bootable Acronis True Image Home 2011, which I've used countless times to clone and migrate various Windows partitions. But this time, I get bootmgr errors no matter what I try, and It's driving me nuts.
What I do:
1) Backup MBR and Windows partition from 1st SSD (Silicon Power Slim S55 120Gb, has only partition on this SSD, active).
2) Recover all that to my 2nd SSD (Samsung SSD 840 PRO 128Gb, all old partitions deleted).
3) Try to boot from 2nd SSD, after I disconnect 1st SSD from my PC.
4) I get a bootmgr error.
Now, to the crazy part. I have backup image of my old Windows partition (Windows 7 Home Premium x64 - this one has a 100Mb active boot partition, if it matters) from SSD#2, and it works just fine when I recover it to SSD#2. And if I recover image of my new Windows partition from SSD#1 back to SSD#1, it works fine too.
I just can't wrap my head around it. How is it that recovering backups to old drives works, but not to the new ones? (I'm speculating here - can't really try to recover SSD#2's image to SSD#1 ATM, because I need a working system)
What am I missing?

In reply to Kurt, welcome to these User… by truwrikodrorow…

Steve, thanks for your reply.
Ideally you should be doing a full disk (and all partitions) backup of the 1st SSD, then doing a full disk restore/recovery of that backup to the 2nd SSD.
That's what I've been doing (essentially). My backup consists of a single partition + MBR.
The 1st SSD has only one partition, and it's active - no 100MB one.

Kurt, after installing the 2nd SSD in the computer, are you checking that this is shown as the correct boot device in the BIOS settings?

Of course. For the most part, I know what I'm doing =)

Kurt, not wanting to question your knowledge here but no obvious answers as to why one drive works but the clone doesn't when everything is looking the same with correct settings?
Another thought, is the new SSD using the same SATA mode in the BIOS as the original drive? i.e. both using AHCI..

I haven't thought of that, so I checked. Unfortunately, yes, they are both using AHCI.
