Problem finding image files on remote hard drive when testing recovery cd - SOLVED

Thread needs solution

My name is Bill. I have True Image 2013 working on my Dell 8500 with Windows 7.
I have questions about back & recovery that I have not been able to understand from the instructions.
I am looking for an experienced user who would be willing to meet with me to clarify my issues with True Image 2013.
I live on Evans Lake just south of Poland, OH.

Bill,
Post your questions. Maybe the Acronis community users can help. As a start, review my signature link 2-A which discusses the ins & out of making a backup task. Also, a review of my signature link 3 may assist. Inside that link, item 3 can help in restoring a drive c backup overtop an existing backup. and several parts of item 5 inside that link discusses how to restore a single file.

Many thanks for your assistance. I will review your links & then develop questions for our Acronis community users.

Help! I store images on remote backup drive & I delete old files however they are still around somewhere as I get "Operation Stopped" messages stating the backup locations are not accessible. I do get "True Image Successful" message for latest full back that I have programmed every day.
How do I properly delete older files to completely eliminate them.
Thanks.

This next link shows how to delete the files using the program. This method will only delete the tib files. If you want also to delete the backup task, that is a separate procedure.
GH5. How to delete backup files using Acronis Backup 'Explorer'

Detete a single backup TASK. This option deletes only the task so no future backups will be created by the task..
GH20. Remove Single Task from Task Menu Listing

Remove the need to perform manual deletions. Set the bacukup scheme to do its own deletion as the file it creates gets older. Not sure which style backups you use so all 3 types listed.
GH11. Create Custom Full Backup Scheme.Keep 4 versions (chains). The 4 is user choice.
GH12. Create Custom Incremental Backup Scheme. 6 Inc, Keep 4 chains. The 6-4 is user choice.
GH13. Create Custom Differential Backup Scheme. 2 Diff, Keep 2 chains. The 2-2 is user choice.

Thanks so much, your GH11 guide answered my questions.
I have one more issue. I made a recovery CD & booted Acronis program so I could test that it worked. Although the system recognized my remote E: drive, I couldn't access any files. Maybe that's normal & the fact the I was able to open the Acronis software was a positive test that the CD is working.
Hopefully you have other GH** guides to walk me thru both the process of testing my recovery CD (above) & also walk me thru recovery process when my C drive is replace with new hardware & I have to use boot CD to access & recover image file on remote disk drive.
Many thanks again.

For recovery examples, look at my signagure link #3 below, depending upon what you are wanting to do.
Within that link:
.. item 5 shows show to recover a few files or folders.
..item 3 shows how to recover C only.
..item 1 and 2 shows how to recover the entire backup and entire disk.

Sorry to say, referenced guides didn't help. My problem is accessing my Seagate remote drive from the True Image 2013 recovery procedure. The Seagate drive is recognized by my Windows 7. I run full backup every day at 9:00 am with files stored on Seagate drive.
After using boot disc to open True Image 2013 (recovery) software,
1. I picked recovery & browsed to find my Seagate remote drive where my backup files reside. It did not show up. Only three (3) are shown, C, Recovery on C drive & cd disc drive are shown.
2. In Tools & Utilities, under add a disk, the Seagate remote drive did show up. I didn't choose to add as it would, I understand, destroy all data.
What must be done have the recovery program recognize the Seagate drive & allow me to select a backup file for recovery?
Hopefully you can describe a solution for my problem.
Thanks.
Bill

More info - I just read 15791 - Acronis Bootable Media Does Not Detect HDD, RAID or NIC. Sounds like by problem. If you agree, would you identify your pertinent guides that walk me thru the solution process. I assume that driver software for my Seagate Backup Plus for MAC, that is configured to work with my desktop Windows 7 software, needs to be added to bootable disc. Hope this helps.
Thanks.
Bill

When booted into the CD and browsing for the backup, when the Seagate does not show, try typing the Seagate unc path into the File Name open window.

Don't use the "add new disk" option. That option is used for initializing a new blank disk. As you noticed in time, if used on the "in use" disk, you will lose all your data.

custom drivers cannot be added to the standard Acronis recovery CD. That is a whole new issue. Before we get into that, let see how you make out with entering the unc path.

Tell us more about the Seagate. Is this a hybrid? What size? Is this GPT? How connected?

When booted to the TI CD, you might also try to simulate taking a backup storing on the Seagate. This may also need the unc path.

I'm not sure what the unc path should be. I entered the file name in the Seasgate drive with F instead of the E. It's the E drive on my desktop & as I noted before, in Acronis recovery I have C, D is recovery & E is CD. I assume that when added, the Seagate will have letter F. Here is path , F:\mybackups\mypartitions\mypartitions_full_b2_s1_v1
Regardless of the validity of the path as the unc, after I typed in the path, I wasn't allowed to enter, OK was not available to me.
Here is info on Seagate.
Seagate Backup plus for MAC - configured to work with Windows.
STDU4000100
PN 1DZ9D4-500 2TB
SN NA5R193W
Windows driver to allow Seagate "for MAC" drives to work on Windows (HFS4WIN.exe)
Connected via USB 3 port on Dell XPS 8500 desktop
Would the Seagate for MAC running on Windows classify it as a hybrid?
Don't understand GPT?
Don't understand TI CD?
Hope this helps.
Many thanks.

Bill,
First, all my discussion is referring to TrueImage Home 2013 and nothing to do with Mac and nothing to do with Seagate backup software.

The TI CD to which I refer is the user created TrueImage Recovery CD. This is used for Recovery of your TrueImage Backups created either from within Windows or when booted to the TI Recovery CD into the TrueImge recovery environment.

The hybrid is a type of disk and it be labelled as such which you do not have.
Your disk is a 4 TB size. Do you have it split into smaller partitions?

Your disk is usb direct so not using a unc path which is network types.

When you created your TrueImage backup task, the letter which assigned to the Seagate by Windows during that task creation is crucial. TrueImge will use that drive letter when looking for tib files. If you insert a flash drive or camera etc prior to the attachment of the seagate, the drive letter assigned by
Windows to the Seagate could change for that assignment and TrueImage would not find the file.

The problem you are having with the 4TB disk not being seen may be the disk size. Is this disk used exclusively by Windows and TrueImage. I am not sure how much more help I can be as have not used your Mac items.

Backup drive is E:\ on my system. All other usb, etc., are F & higher.
Backup drive is used exclusively by Windows & True Image. Properties show capacity of 1.81 TB.
On browse in recovery process, regardless of what I type in for file identification, the OK button is not available for activation.
I have e-mailed Seagate support asking the question about compatibility working with True Image 2013,
I assume that True Image 2013 technical support ($20.00 per incident) should be able to provide solution for me. Do you agree? It could be that I have to purchase a new drive that works exclusively with Windows.
Thanks for you continuing comments & support.
Bill

Please post a screen capture of your Windows Disk Management showing your system disk and include the Seagate disk.

I have visited Youngstown many years ago so have a general idea of where Evans Lake is.

Your Seagate disk is advertised as a 4TB in size yet it shows only as 2TB in disk management. Perhaps Seagate is playing games with it as Windows will only recognize max 2 in MBR. Would you take another picture like capture1 Disk management EXCEPT before you snap, click the View option also click Top and then click Disk List option. This shows more info at the top and whether a GPT disk. Now do the capture.

Would you also do a capture of your main program showing the backup task which you used to create the 2 backups.

When booted to the 2013 TI Recovery CD, you might also try to simulate taking a backup and storing on the Seagate. Does this show the Seagate disk as a target for the backup?

If no view, pull the cable and reconnect to see if recognized.

Try also connecting the Seagate cable into another connector such as usb2.

Capture 3 is image of sample, showing the set up for my current program shown in Capture 4.
I changed port to a usb2, no change. I had changed the port a few days ago to another usb3. I assume it's better that I connect to a usb3 port. Does it make any difference to True Image 2013?
I didn't understand your suggestion to simulate taking a backup & storing on the Seagate while booted by the recovery disk. I didn't see any path to simulate & save. Also, 2013 TI doesn't recognize my Seagate???
I heard back from Seagate. They suggested that I run a chkdsk. I did & there were no problems.

More Information - Here is answer from Seagate on 2 TB vs 4 TB, etc.
"The HFS driver should allow the full 4TB, as all it is converting is the file system. The partitioning scheme (MBR or GPT) is what limits the capacity. Have you reformatted the drive at any point? If you check, what format does it currently show up as?

One other thing to check, how do you currently have the drive connected to the computer? Is it directly connected, or in a USB hub or router? For troubleshooting, make sure it is directly connected to rule out any other devices interfering. It may work in USB hubs, but we cannot support it if you attach it to a router.

We cannot troubleshoot Acronis itself, but if Windows sees the drive, so should most backup software."

1. Your capture shows your Windows disk has hidden partitions. The type backup I recommend for you is the "disk image backup--not the partition type backup. See my signature link 2-A below. The disk image backup will include all your partitons and you need them all if you needed to restore to a new disk or if a virus. I don't know whether you are currently including them all or not but if the backup type is made following my illustration, you know you have them all.

If you choose to do this, you will need to stop the old task and create a new backup task pointing to a new folder on your backup storage disk.

2. Your capture shows your Seagate to be partition as a GPT style disk.
Your system disk is partitioned as MBR type.

GH1. How to change a backup task from scheduled to "Do Not Schedule".
GH2. How to enable a backup task schedule or change a schedule time..
GH3. How to create a non-scheduled backup task on the first try.
GH4. Illustrate Manual Backup Now option or Repeat backups.

GH11. Create Custom Full Backup Scheme.Keep 4 versions (chains). The 4 is user choice. Automatic deletion of old backups on a revolving basis.

3. Your issue may involve the GPT style partiioning and because it is version 2013.

One option you can try is to download the 2014 TrueImage Recovery CD and boot from the 2014 trial version and see if the 2014 trial version CD sees your GPT disk. This does NOT involve your 2013 installation but is one more check to see if we can get this to working. If the 2014 trial sees your Seagate, then you can consider upgrading to 2014. The trial, if seen, can also be used for actual recovey .

Here is what you need to do if you wish to try the 2014 trial CD.
Refer signature item #9.
1. Sign up for the 2024 trial version with Acronis.
They will provide a new test license.
2. Register the 2014 trial license into your personal account
3. Once the Acronnis provided 2014 trial license is registered by you,
this will provide access to the file downloads as per my illustration.
4. Download only the ISO file as illustrted in illustratiin #7 inside my link.
You do NOT need the program download. YOu only want the Bootable Media ISO download.
5. Once downloaded, RIGHT CLICK on the ISO file and choose the "open with" Windows
disk Image burner. This will burn the iso image onto a new blank CD disc.
6. Once you have the completed CD, boot from the new 2014 CD can see your GPT style storage disk.
Note, the new CD will only function as a Recovery CD and will not work as to create backups.
It only function for us is to see if it works and if it works, it can then be used to recover any files or partitions you wish to recover.
-----------------------------
Label the new CD as "2014 trial" as it has limited capabilities as a trial version.

I ordered the trial True Image 2104 but I goofed a little. I didn't follow your instruction to the letter. TI 2014 replaced my TI 2013 when I installed. TI 2014 shows my backup programs (disk image) established with TI 2013. I did make a CD boot disk. Seagate didn't show up but all my other usb ports (4 ports/slots for camera cards) on desktop showed up.
Unfortunately I couldn't understand your instructions for "downloading only the ISO file". From where I'm at now, can I still do that with some clarification on the process from you?
Part of my confusion resulted from not being able to access illustration # 7. I didn't identify "illustration #7 inside my link".
I do plan to upgrade to TI 2014 aside from the Seagate issue.
Please give me appropriate guidance.
Many thanks.
Bill

Click on miy signature link 9.
The fgure 6 shows how to download the program.
The figure 7 shows how to download just the ISO file. This is what you could not find.
The figure 8 show the user manual download

As a 30 day trial user with 2014 installed, and you are within your 30 day trial, you qualify for trial user direct ACronis support.
If you decide to purchase 2014 full or upgrade, you also qualify for 30 days of free direct support.
If it were me, I would contact support without delay via Live Chat and get your Seagate problem resolved.
Support help instructions found along the left margin.
Do report that the Seagate is a GPT style partititioning and not MBR.
Should you need to use a WiinPE type recovery CD to see your Seagate, you will need the premium version so better to get this resolved before you make your purchase.

Your 2014 installation comments sounds like up 2014 was installed overtop of 2013 rather than my preferred clean install but that can be done later if needed.
Make a posting later to let us know how your Seagate problem is resolved by Acronis. Good luck.

Hi Grover, I did chat with Acronis. I did purchase TI 2014 Premium. Their support person created the WinPE bootable media. It worked so I not can access my Seagate disk when in recovery mode. I believe the windows drivers were main cause for problem??
Thanks again for all your assistance.
Best regards.
Bill

Glad it worked out.
