question about backup and restore all files and installed programs (different hardware)

Thread needs solution

Hey,

i hope you can help me with a problem:

i got an old PC with alot of files and installed programs. what i want to do is backup EVERYTHING and restore it on a new PC.

I see that with Acronis True Image 2010 and the Plus Pack, i can do that.

Now my questions:

After i backup all the files and programs. How can i get it on the new PC ? Do i have to install Windows first and than restore everything ?

EDIT: Ok, i think i can figure this out myself...just found the UserGuides...

And my second Question:

As there is Windows XP installed on the old PC and i want Windows 7 on the new PC, what would you recommend for this scenario (old pc with WinXP -> backup every data and installed programs -> restore on a new PC with Win7) ?

Is all this possible with Acronis True Image 2010 + Plus Pack ?

Thank you veeery much...

Hello Becker, welcome to the forum!

Let me clarify this situation for you.

Even if you have found the answer to your first question, let me address it as well:

After i backup all the files and programs. How can i get it on the new PC ? Do i have to install Windows first and than restore everything ?

Generally, our Plus Pack add-on is intended for entire HDD \ partition image recovery onto dissimilar hardware. It's responsible for HAL level drivers change, so your system will boot correctly on new PC. This feature is not affected in case of separate files \ data recovery. Furthermore, most programs will not work if you just restore their files on new system, because they need to add some values into registry, update information in installed programs etc. So the best way to transfer the products to the new PC is to backup the entire OS.

As there is Windows XP installed on the old PC and i want Windows 7 on the new PC, what would you recommend for this scenario (old pc with WinXP -> backup every data and installed programs -> restore on a new PC with Win7) ?

No, you won't be able to restore the programs from one system to another, especially when those systems are different. In this situation, I would recommend the following scenario:

Create a backup of your XP system (the full backup of the entire drive where OS is installed), install Windows 7 on your new PC and install all programs you will need to use. Then just restore separate data from the archive to your new system (text documents, saved games files, program configuration files etc).

I'd like to make sure all your queries regarding Acronis products are resolved.
Additionally to this, you are welcome to ask me any other questions concerning Acronis, and I will assist you further.

Thank you.
