Questions about the use of this product.

Thread needs solution

Hello, I am looking purchasing this backup software, and not being technologically savvy, I have a few concerns and questions in regards to "Acronis True Image".

What I'm looking for is a program that would be able to copy all my files (and/or my OS) on to an external hard drive, then port over the data from the external hard drive to a new drive. Would it be possible to do this? (Not having an OS installation disc, but being able to move all info + OS on to the new hard drive, thus not needing to install a new OS). Under the "Features" tab on the specification of this software, it says "The Perfect Image", which I'm assuming it does as per above.

Will this product also allow me to port over everything BUT the OS, as I may plan to install a new OS on a new drive, but keep all of my installed program's configurations and such.

Also, just so I can visualize what I would have to do, let's say I use the "The Perfect Image" function of this program and it creates a back up copy on an external hard drive. So the drive (of which has been backed up) now fails, and cannot boot up anymore. I buy a new hard drive and want to restore my OS+all my old programs. How would I go about doing so? (I'm assuming if I install a new OS on the new drive, there would be a function on the program to port over the programs right?).

Also, if this thread is in the wrong area, I do apologize.

Thank you.

Yes, if you create a full and complete backup of all partitions of your disk, that backup can be restored onto a new disk and all on the new will be same as it was on the old. This link will show you how to create the backup task and much more.

The link below will show you how to restore your "disk mode" backup onto a new replacement disk. There are several methods possible as listed in example 1 and 2 at this link below. The TI bootable recovery CD is the method of choice when restoring a backup onto the new disk.

If you install a new OS, you will need to re-install all programs fresh. If you restore a backup onto this disk, you will overwrite the new os with the old. You can make use of the backup or attach the old disk and simply copy some of the old files onto the new system as personal data files or misc files.
