Recovered files are "read only"

Thread needs solution

I have recovered a number iof files both from an image and just file/folder backup. When I try to open one I get a warning box saying that they are "read only" in spite of in propertied they do NOT have the "read only" attribute. Why? How do I correct?
I have included screen shots of a typical situation.

Have you tried changing the setting and then changing it back?

Does it have the same problem on a copy of the restored file?

Has this only happened with the Quattro Pro files?

The warning message also says the file may be "In Use", so perhaps the file still has a file lock set on it. You can clear file locks by rebooting or by logging out and then back in.

I have changed the attributes back and forth. No help.
I have made a copy. No help.
Happens, both, with QP and WP.
Access denied on several other files that were restored.

I started over because I got confused with permissions, different file system, sharing, etc.
Using Acronis TI Home 2011 build # 6597 .I went to a file backup made 10 Dec. Clicked on Explore and Recover. Was able to drill down to a Quattro Pro file named Monthly Glucose. qpw. That file and several others opened with Quattro Pro. So I knew the Quattro files were OK in the backup (.tib). I then Recovered all those file back to their original folder. Now I cannot open them. I get a message that they are "read only" although that attribute is not set. When I click to close the error box I get an "Access denied" box. Acronis is obviously doing some thing to those file on the way back to their original folder. Is it clearer now what is happening? I still need somebody smarter than me to help.

Could you try copying the files to a FAT32 partition and see if you can open them?

Does restoring to an alternate location make any difference?

Does renaming the file(s) make any difference?

I'll save the FAT32 thing till last as I would have to create a partition.
Restoring to an alternate destination doesn't help nor does renaming.
I even installed a trial copy of QP X5 as that is W7 compatible. Still no difference. It sems that TI is doing this. Now to get them find a workaround. Maybe it would be worthwhile to buiy suppot for TI Home 2011. Got any idea how good support is and the cost?

If you have a flash drive available you can use that for the FAT32 test.

Another option would be to boot to a Live Linux CD (like Ubuntu) and see if you can copy or otherwise "change" the files to allow access.

If you take one of the files to another computer, can you access it there? Is the problem just on this computer or does it follow the file? Same goes for if you restore the file on another computer.

Do you get any error message if you open the file with something else and try to save it? For example, with Notepad or WordPad? I'm starting to wonder if the "lock" is actually on the file or if it's more directly related to QP and WP.

Does this link help?

Could this be because of security settings on the file?

I did restore the entire folder associated with QP to a FAT32 thumb drive. Was able to open all files. When I copied them to the original folder, same old behavior.
Not able to do the "other computer " thing.
When I attempted to open one of the QP files I did not get a "read only" info message, but I did get a message that said I did not have permission to open the file. So it appears that some sort of "lock" is with the file.

I would you check your security settings and verify that your user or class of users have the full control permissions.

What happens if you don't copy the FAT32 files to the original folder and instead copy them into a different folder on the same drive?

Did you check out the link in Post #7? The problem may be caused by QP.

Yes, I checked out the link.

I copied subject file to a folder in the C drive root. It opened fine.

I'm going to set up an experiment with Quattro Pro12 and the trial version of Quattro X5, the newest and compatible with W7. Give me a little time.

I setup the experiment like this;
Two Quattro Pros version 12 and version X5.
An Acronis TI home 2011 build 6597 file backup that contains the Quattro Pro 12 and Wordperfect 12 data files.
The original folder with the data files recovered.Path is C:\USERS\WILLIAM\MYFILES\
The thumb drive formatted to FAT32 containing the files recovered to a "new location" .
The new folder that contains the files copied from the thumb drive. Path is C:\NEW FOLDER\
And the original folder containing the data files that were copied from the new folder.
So the original folder is tested twice. Once with a direct recovery and again with files that took a route from the Acronis backup to the

thumb drive, to the new folder and finally to the original folder.

THE RESULTS:

Quatrro Pro12 and WP 12

Recover to original
I get a runtime error when I try to open Quattro Pro 12
WordPerfect 12 open WP file OK

Recover to thumb drive
I get a runtime error when I try to open Quattro Pro 12
WordPerfect 12 open WP file OK

Copy from thumb to C:\new folder\
I get a runtime error when I try to open Quattro Pro 12
WordPerfect 12 open WP file OK

Copy from C:\new folder\ to original
I get a runtime error when I try to open Quattro Pro 12
WordPerfect 12 open WP file OK

Quattro Pro X5 and WP X5

Recover to original
Quattro Pro X5 Got read only error
WordPerfect X5 Open WP file OK

Recover to thumb drive
Quattro Pro X5Opened OK
WordPerfect X5 open WP file OK

Copy from thumb to C:\new folder\
Quattro Pro X5 Opened OK
WordPerfect X5 open WP file OK

Copy from C:\new folder\ to original
Quattro Pro X5 Opened OK
WordPerfect X5 open WP file OK

My observations:
The runtime error is not related to the "read only" problem. Just popped up yesterday and I haven't found the problem
1. WP 12 opens the Wp files.
2. WP X5 opens the WP files.
3. QP X5 gets a read error when files recovered to original folder.
4. QP X5 opens files in all other instances. Seems that the invisible lock gets stripped out on the long way around.
5. The question "Why does TI Home 2011" do this is still unanswered

Seeing as how only WordPerfect and Quattro files are affected I am using this workaround.
Store all wp and Qp files in the new folder and rename it appropriately.
I expect that Acronis will never get around to a fix. So why wait?
