Recovery from External Hard Drive

Hi all - did a bit of searching and couldn't find (or didn't quite put together) the process for recovering a failed hard drive using disk images stored on external media (in this case an external hard drive). Here's a brief overview:
We have multiple computers on 2 research vessels. An image of each computer's hard drive is made from time to time (Acronis True Image Home 2014) and stored on an external hard drive. One of these computers recently suffered a disk failure and I would like to recover the disk using the image on the external hard drive. From what I understand, I can boot using a bootable media CD and enter the recovery console. However, will I be able to see the usb-connected hard drive containing the images from which to recover? I am attempting this recovery "3rd-party" (e-mailing back and forth with the ship), so I apologize for the info gaps.
The bootable media CD was mcreated on a separate but same model computer (HP rp5700) - I have read that bootable media is not computer-specific, which leads me to the question about USB-connected drives (and typically required drivers, etc). Any thoughts on how to go about this? Is it possible to connect an existing or new hard drive for the "failed" computer via a USB connection kit and "recover" the disk using another computer (e.g., laptop)?
Thanks for any info you can provide.
