Required storage space

Thread needs solution

Hello all,

I am new to Acronis True Image and I am trying to understand how to get the most out of the software. My main hard drive is 1 Terabyte, which I plan to backup. I understand that the size varies with the type of backup scheme that I plan to use, but I need to know how space each scheme will require before I can use them for backups.

My question is how much space do I need on another drive to backup a full 1 terabyte hard drive with the preset backup schemes in True Image? Some sort of benchmark like this will greatly be appreciated.

I doubt that your 1 TB drive is "full". How much space is used?

For general files, ATI compresses by 50% or 60% or so. I always choose maximum compression. If you have lots of relatively uncompressible data, such as music or video files, then those will not compress further.

It isn't full, but just for comparison's sake, pretend that it is full. I am trying to make sure that I am totally covered even in the worst case scenario.

I've given you guidelines. Apply them to your estimated data size and type.

But what about the different backup schemes? Are there any guidelines for those? It seems you have only answered the question for single version.

I guess that's because I prefer full backups.

Incremental and differential backups will backup only those sectors that have changed since last backup. That can significantly reduce the size of subsequent backups. There's no hard guideline, as it depends how much your system has changed between backups. Note that if your drive is defragmented, the new backup may be virtually the same size as the original full backup.

My Win 7 partition, which only contains Win 7 and my installed software, no data, occupies 38GB on disk. A full backup using standard compression is 21GB. I don't see how anyone can help you much with incrementals or differentials as there are just too many variables involved.

Amit,
It is not the difference so much between the different versions as it is how many backups do you plan on keeping.

You have the full backup, or a full plus X incrrementals, or a full plus x differentials.
Any of the 3 types begins as the same size as all begin with a full backup.
The user manuan can help explain the difference.

It can also be important as to what type data you plan to back up. Whether it changes or whether it is static and can be copied to other media for a backup.

The answer to your question will take trial and error on your part. Look at item #2 below and spend some time digesting what it covers. This will help you to answer your questions. The illustrations of 11-Full; 11-Inc and 11-Diff are good examples of how to configure your backup schemes. I do recommend that the scheme be a custom scheme as per one of those examples.

For users not experienced with Trui Image, I suggest you start with a 'DISK MODE" FULL IMAGE BACKUP.

As both WAS and Tuttle have indicated, you can expect your full backup to be abut 70% of your USED SPACE.

You do not mention the size or type of storage space you plan as you will need addtitional disks for storage of your 1TB disk.
Unless your 1TB disk is almost empty, your storage disk will need to be larger than 1TB.

Wlecome to the learning curve of TrueImage Home.
