Is restore of EXT3 "chattr +i" files reliable?

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I am wondering if True Image 2013 honors "immutable" attribute ("chattr +i") on EXT3/EXT4 files.

This attribute indicates, among other things, that the file should not be moved in file system.
This is typically used when file's extent map (sector numbers) is stored in partition's boot block.
GRUB2 "core.img" is an example of such file.

Is it safe to backup and restore partitions with immutable files using True Image 2013?

I.e. when restoring a partition, will True Image 2013 restore the file at the same sector numbers as in original partition?

Should "sector by sector" option should be used when backing up partitions with immutable files?

Thanks,
Sergey

 Hello Sergey,

Thank you for your post. I will be glad to answer your question.

True Image 2013 as any previous version of True Image does not have any particular mechanism to work with files with immutable attribute. Such files are either placed to the same sectors in case of sector-by-sector backup/restore, or are moved to another place with no further modifications. Thus, applications that depend on this attribute might fail after restore. Please note that True Image 2013 has only been tested and supports Windows Operating Systems, so Linux OS and software for Linux is thus not supported for any operation.

Let me know if you have additional questions to that topic.

Thank you.
