Restore from TIB file onto new drive

Thread needs solution

I just had to send my laptop back to Dell for repair, and they have reimaged the hard drive back to a bare Vista image.

They advised me to do a backup before I sent it in, so I got Acronis True Image home and created a backup of the full disk on an external drive.

Now I have the backup, but I can't work out how to recover it, as I no longer have the trueimage software installed. (Do I need it installed?). The backup is one big file (something like a "tib" file or similar).

This is the primary (C) drive we're talking about here.

On a related note, is is recommended for me to restore the backup in its entirety? That mght just bring back the problems I had sent the machine to dell for in the first place, right? How do I get just my files if I don't want to recover the disk image in full.

BTW I don't have any "bootable disk" and my trueimage software was a trial download - I guess this is how the software really gets trialled, right?

thanks
Guy

JMO Guy - I would not put that backup back onto the HD. I think you are asking for more trouble. UNLESS, you are 100% sure it was a hardware issue to start with. If Dell gave you a report on what they did to repair machine, it might help guide your actions.

Guy, it's all "water under the bridge" now but, yes, you would need the bootable True Image CD to restore that Image. I don't know if you're allowed to download the Trial version twice or not. If you are allowed to, do so and make the CD pronto.

Whether you should restore that Image or not depends on what the problem was that required the notebook to be sent back to Dell.

Once you install True Image again, you can simply 2-click on the Image file in Windows Explorer to extract any data you need.

I'm pretty sure it was a hardware issue, and dell DID replace the motherboard, but apparently reimaged the drive just to be sure. What if I take a new image backup BEFORE I restore my old one, then if it all goes pear-shaped I could restore the clean dell image, right?

So double clicking on the TIB file lets me select what I need, rather than simply overwriting my entire disk, right?

Certainly it doesn't hurt to make an Image of the factory state before you try to restore your old Image as long as you have the room for it.

Yes, with ver 2009 you can 2-click on an Image file while in Windows Explorer and it will open to show the drives just like when you 2-click "My Computer".  And if it is only the data you want then that will be an easy way to get at it and save it elsewhere (flash drive for example) before you attempt to do the Recovery on the Image you made before you sent the laptop in.

But doesn't Dell give you a way to make your own Factory Restore CDs/DVDs?  I think all laptop makers do so.

As DwnNDrty suggest, all mfgs give you the option to create a Factory Restore CD/DVD - I highly suggest that you do so as a first step. As a second step I suggest that you create a backup of your current factory system using the Dell backup utility and Acronis TI. It will be MUCH quicker to restore if necessary from the Dell-BU/TIB file than go through the factory restore (this is plan B) using the factory restore CD.

I've been going through restore hell and hope that I finally got it right. I'm in the process of restoring files/folders from my TIB. The bad news is that this is a SUPER slow process but I "think" it is the last step of my hell.

Hello Guy,

Thank you for your interest in Acronis Products

The newly installed system will not be overwritten from full drive image if you select “Restore Chosen Files and Folders” from “Chose Restoration Method” window. Please also note that Acronis bootable disc created with a trial version of the program allows you only to recover option, all other options like Backup, Clone, etc. are disabled.

I am so frustrated with TI because I had to send my laptop in for repair and they sent me a loaner. I have a .tib file that I made which I put on an external drive. The original drive is "dead." Acronis will not allow me to extract files from the *.tib. On top of that, when I went to register the software to even try, it came back with an "already registered" error, so I can't even get support.

Now, I have a presentation that I cannot access all because I used this program to back up. I have googled, searched forums, etc. for a solution, but nothing. I cannot believe that a backup software would not allow you to extract files--in particular because what was backed up might have been corrupted, but the PPT's and xls could still be good. HELP!

What version of TI do you have? What OS are you using? Can you boot from the rescue cd and validate the image?

Version 2009 and Windows XP. I have a Windows 7 computer also. Very frustrating to not be able to access backed up files!

suzips
Are you able to validate the backup image using the rescue cd?
